The DVSA's been out and about asking instructors what they'd like to see change in motorcycle training, including the CBT.

Crib notes are that nothing is changing (Y U ax tho?) but they'll have a jolly good think about it.

https://despatch.blog.gov.uk/2015/12/22/modernising-motorcycle-training-roadshows/

Arrow More surprise, mofo! assessments of instructors.
Arrow Yes, doing Theory before CBT makes sense but we need bigger boys to sort that out.
Arrow No minimum or maximum price on CBT because free market.
Arrow You're not allowed to just fast track eternaLearners through repeat CBTs... except actually you can. But give them a stern Tut Tut and tell them to pass their tests.

No surprises, really. They seem well meaning but don't actually have much authority or desire to change anything.

If you mean to actually ride motorcycles...
Sure.
Providing bike riders also have to do a cycle proficiency and horse riding on the road course for the same reasons! Smile

I agree with the cycle proficiency but the other half may not agree to me riding other animals (Not that it matters now) Laughing

To which level? I can imagine fuzzy little heads exploding if it's to level 3... and would reading cyclecraft be mandatory Laughing

I did cycle proficiency at school in the early 90s, possibly late 80s. It was basically a cut down version of level 1 & a slight taster of level 2 from the current bikeability system. If you haven't done the 3 level/module system then level 3 is a real eye opener.

I though the important parts of theory were already part of the cbt.

The theory test's a joke today, ran by an american company as a law unto itself with questions that have nothing to do with driving inserted into it and a hazard perception test that's been heavily criticised.

As for licensing, I'd knock it back to the 1970s plus one CBT or at the very least have each time a CBT is taken progressively unlock learner access to bigger bikes.

I did a cycling pro course in the late 80's, but was very disappointed as it seemed to be about wearing stupid arm bands and riding very slowly in a line of people on the road while waving your arms about in a spastic way.

There was no off roading, wheelie training or instruction on how to use parks and pedestrian high streets as your playground and treat shoppers as a slalom course.

If I had to learn to drive a car in 2016 and a bike, then I would have no problem doing a horse driving test either, as long as I could pick the horse driving school and the instructor and her outfit too! Wink

If you're still cycling then do the level 2 & 3 bikeability. Some places insist you do level 1 which will be teaching you to suck eggs but when you get to level 3 I think anyone who cycles will learn something new.

What does bikeability involve then? I'd never heard of it before TBH.

These days if I cycle on the roads commuting or a ride to an off road location, then I prefer to ride the pavement as much as possible. Especially on any busy main roads, which is most of them these days.

I only cycle on the road not to comply and be a good courteous road user and all that. If I can get round a traffic light by curb hopping I would, and as bikes have no numberplate then red lights and lane discipline is not something I care about.

Bikeability is the modern cycle proficiency system. There are 3 levels and it’s analogous to mod 1, mod 2 & advanced tuition. The cycle proficiency did was a watered down version of level 1 with a bit of level 2. Level 3 goes into full on defensive riding & road positioning.
