I shared my album on the largest Leeds community facebook group (and now it's been shared by 1200 other people and rising! ). This image had quite a few people complaining about the guy being a moron for trying to get through in his car.
Later in the evening I got a private message from the driver saying that he was just trying to save his business, there was £200K of damage to his HQ, how could I be so insensitive around a time like this, etc etc, requesting that I delete the photos or remove the comments.
Turns out he wasn't lying, but I can say with certainty that he was just being a cocky shit driving through there like that. The bit he was trying to cross was needless as there are plenty of other ways around. Still, I deleted the comments. Fair enough his HQ was submerged in 5ft of water so I didn't see the point in bringing any more aggro his way. Utter moron for thinking he's the big man in his city-boy 4x4 though. |

I found Monbiot interesting on this - https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/dec/07/hide-evidence-storm-desmond-floods-paris-talks and in particular this article from 2014, discussing how farmers are paid to keep the land clear of vegation that would delay water heading downstream - https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/mar/03/rich-landowners-farmers-welfare-nfu-defra .
Even if you consider Monbiot a bit out there on green concerns, I think he's fairly accurate pointing up the massive subsidies to a handful of landowners and the resulting incentives to manage the land in ways that worsen flooding.
Fairly ironic that Tim Farron got stranded in his car, when he was explicitly against reducing upland farming - https://www.thewestmorlandgazette.co.uk/news/9651561.Natural_England_s__dangerous__upland_vision_scrapped/ - bare, unforested uplands (for rearing livestock) is exactly the kind of geography that ensures water comes downhill quickly and turns into floods. ____________________ Bikes: S1000R, SH350; Exes: Vity 125, PS125, YBR125, ER6f, VFR800, Brutale 920, CB600F, SH300x4

monbiot is off his head, the hills as he describes have been the same for millennia, the current floods in the north have sweet fa to do with maize as it is too wet in normal years to grow maize, so they do not bother, this current situation is from a mixture of once in a lifetimes amount of rain, in which some of my farmer friends have said has not stopped for 6 / 10 weeks, so the ground is saturated and cannot take anymre water and rivers/ streams that have not been cleared out by the environment agency because they like the banks to be a wildlife haven while people down the stream get flooded out.
The maize growers he mentions have been in operation for 5 years and now the subisides have stopped, he has a predetermined conclusion and tries and blames farmers around it.
It really is simple, if the land is saturated, from this massive amount of water that has come down, it has to be fucked off very quickly, and because the rivers and streams are running at a quarter of their capacity, the water over flows in to the towns and villages before making it's way to the sea, and this is before we look at the places these people that have been flooded out, in flood plains before the houses were built.
Monbiot is full of shit because he had a bad time on a farm when he was younger and now has a vendetta.
He is totally hypocritical in his ideals, he wants rewilding, yet 'rewilding' as it were is what flooded the summerset levels, because man made environments need maintenance, we either build our houses on stilts, or get dredging. ____________________ '00 Aprilia RS50 > '92 Honda CG > '99 Yamaha Fazer > '91 Yamaha RXS > '79 Suzuki X5 > 01' Honda Cg > 07' Honda Cg > 82' Kawasaki Z200 > suzuki gsxr 400 gk73a > honda vfr 400 NC30> Yamaha RD350 YPVS F2 > Kawasaki ZZR 600 D1 > Yamaha TZR 250 2MA >Suzuki TL1000R > Yamaha TDR250 > Honda 929 blade > Suzuki SV1000 > Honda H100

Personally I think global warming is probably a real issue since the vast majority of science seems to agree. I'm not an expert myself but I'd rather rely on the intelligent, tested and re-tested, peer-reviewed accounts of the professionals, instead of uninformed amateur opinions of naysayers.
However.
I thought the recent floods were caused by an El Nino event, which isn't global warming and isn't uncommon or alarming. It's just that it only happens every 10 or 20 years. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-35172409
The article about dredging is quite interesting though. Certainly would have helped! |

You really think a sheep farmer is an expert on water ecology? He has a strong vested interest in keeping uplands bare.
Dredging increases the rate at which water flows downstream. It's fairly obvious: the faster you get the water to drain, the bigger the resulting downstream will be when you get a lot of rain.
If you can get the land upstream to act as a sponge, reducing the rate at which it flows out, you don't need enormous rivers downstream to cope.
Moving water faster is a sure recipe for overflowing rivers downstream. ____________________ Bikes: S1000R, SH350; Exes: Vity 125, PS125, YBR125, ER6f, VFR800, Brutale 920, CB600F, SH300x4

You just have to accept that places will flood, monbiot seems to have in his head that mass vegetation will stop the sorts of flooding that has happened, it will not, nothing will, we cannot control mother nature at her worst and the sooner people get over this, the better
Might help if people stopped building on known flood plains, and started listening to the people that have farmed the lands for millennia , your arrogance has just shown this by trying to do down sheep farmers, monbiot and the so called experts do all their research on computer profiling, and it never works, mother nature is always one step ahead.
I very much doubt this is from global warming, as there has been many great floods over the last century, all we have now is more houses built on places where the river used to spill over, all this extra building and surface coverage takes up land that could be soaking up water to slow down the flow, but even then, with mass surges of water like this, and the constant rain some people have had, the land is water logged and will not take anymore. ____________________ '00 Aprilia RS50 > '92 Honda CG > '99 Yamaha Fazer > '91 Yamaha RXS > '79 Suzuki X5 > 01' Honda Cg > 07' Honda Cg > 82' Kawasaki Z200 > suzuki gsxr 400 gk73a > honda vfr 400 NC30> Yamaha RD350 YPVS F2 > Kawasaki ZZR 600 D1 > Yamaha TZR 250 2MA >Suzuki TL1000R > Yamaha TDR250 > Honda 929 blade > Suzuki SV1000 > Honda H100

I don't think anyone thinks developing flood plain land for new build housing estates is sensible other than housing developers and estate agents looking to make money. On a related issue, inviting in a large replacement population does no good to ease the pressure on sensible and sustainable long term housing and land use.
The reason why there is a jaded cynicism for modern supposed earth-based green "-ology" sciences is because science, like the majority of education has become politicised. It's "education" to promote an agenda, that is not to be questioned or debated, or you and your career are toast. Dissent and you are a "denier". Expect a large gaggle of screaming cultists, who swallowed the agenda wholesale, asking for your head. If you have a career, then shut up, say nothing out of place or publish anything that questions the agenda, and you wont end up pushing shopping trolleys in Asda. Modern education and science are not places to challenge belief systems, they're there to repeat what you were told and follow the herd. Tradition and accumulated cultural and empirical knowledge, gained over centuries, are part of the racist patriarchy that needs to die out. ____________________ Prize cunt

Interesting. I read somewhere that we've covered an area the size of Lancashire in concrete since the WWII and thought that may have contributed to flooding...but thinking again I can see that if 5" of rain falls in 24hrs it's gonna flood regardless. ____________________ Diabolical homemade music Bandcamp and Soundcloud
