I have one of these

https://i65.tinypic.com/25aui44.jpg

It's getting on for 9 years old now. It could really do with a service, a couple of times a day it'll just stop for no apparent reason and a gentle 'tap' will get it going again. If it's left in a draw it never stops, not much use there though.

Is there an easy way to service a mechanical watch? what expense would be involved?

Are there any jewellers in Kent that you could ask for a quotation?

Taking it apart, safely, would require some special (small) tools. Cleaning the watch by a professional is not that expensive actually (if there is no local watch repair man, you can always send the watch via mail). Well, he'll probably take the back off and tell you quite right away how much will he ask for the cleaning/repair.

The watch stopping could be anything from dirt/dust in the case to worn bearing jewels. Thumbs Up

Sound like something is loose inside. My daughter's boyfriend has a watch left by his granddad that never worked despite being fully wound. A local watch shop wanted £100 to look at it. I took the back off and found that a tiny post had come un-screwed and lodged in the pendulum. I carefully removed it and the watch started right away.

There's a watch shop in Grays I use - cheap and old school. Not too far for you to go I guess but it's a trip out to get there

Not too far, a trip out on the Cbr. I'll open the watch and have a look around first, spray it with wd40 and a blast of compressed air, see what that does.

It's a place called Lyn Jon on Southend Road Grays RM17 5. He's a bit slow in turnaround but he's put a couple of my older watches back together well

Not entirely the best recommendation for a watch repairer!

Why not give it a good shake and listen for anything loose? If you hear something moving about inside pop the back off and see what's up.

I clocked that too. You have to watch yourself on here these days. But I'm dialled into it now. I'd think of some more but I'm strapped for time - matters out of my hands

Yeah, the inherent problem with squirting WD40 into the mechanism is that the watch will run fast thereafter, as time will keep on slipping, slipping, slipping into the future.
Flying like an eagle, no less.

I dimly recall reading a tip about putting some butter in a watch
to improve its accuracy.
Cant remember where though
