Depends, is he out looking for it now or just mourning the loss? |

Sorry to hear this.
In addition to the above, I trust that (if the insurance didn't renew and how joyful it would be if it had) he SORNed it. I'd hate to see him getting a blackmail demand from DVLA for a stolen bike. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Look around all of the local housing estates and industrial estates.
Typically bikes are nicked for two reasons - joyriding, or selling. Typically small and off-road bikes are stolen for joyriding, they are then found crashed/burnt out near some woods or a park. Shinier bikes are stolen for selling - either whole, overseas, or as parts.
Bikes stolen to sell have to be taken back to a secure lock-up for storage or dismantling before the next stage. This lock-up will usually contain several bikes, so the theives want to protect its location. Therefore, stolen bikes are typically dumped not far from where they were nicked for a week or so prior to moving on in case they have a tracker.
So get on your bike and poke around all of the side streets on your local estates. Bikes are generally left on the street in plain view. Call the police first and report it, and if you find it call the police before touching it. |
I'm going to get dressed and have a look around the local 'places'. I only have a pedal bike though. I joined this forum for when I actually get a motorbike myself...my excitement has dampened now because nowhere I put it will it ever be safe.
The bike is really heavy so it must have been organized and not an impulsive robbery because the bike had a chain and disk lock, front and back, locked to the wall and the steering lock ON. They came prepared.
My dad is in work now, barely. He's just lost £3000 to scumbags and knowing that it's uninsured there doesn't seem to be any light in that regard.
I'm just going to have to scout myself.
I've been checking Gumtree and Ebay all morning just in case...I know it's a long shot though as it's probably going to be stripped for parts and moved for pennies by tomorrow. |

Surely given the above it will have been a crop-the-chain then heave it into a Transit job? |
Probably, but it depends on your assumptions. OP seems to assume that it was a van job, by which I assume that there were bits of chain but not disc locks lying around.
But even if the disc locks weren't cut off at the scene, they could have unbolted two out of three locked discs and still have had a working brake on it.
Long shot, but what c_dug said. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
