Mileage and value

So I bought these street triple with about 15k on it, which I thought was ok ish with 5k/yr.

However leisure bikes are apparently only supposed to do 2k a year, is that right?

Doesn't anyone ride their bikes?

Which bike though? Many of us have several, several of us have many.

I do a 25 mile round trip commute, about 4.5 days a week, 48 weeks a year = 5400 miles.

Divide that by two bikes and sloppy seconds on Mrs Borg's small and medium mummy buses, add in leisure riding, which I do a fair bit less of now that I'm bike commuting more often, divide by pi and subtract the good parts of the Curate's Egg. How many miles per vehicle?

Actually, I know exactly, as the Nazi Tractor was in for its 2nd MOT today. MOT bloke noted that it had done 2,500 miles in a year (2468 to be precise), and that's more than most bikes that he sees in.

A weekend warrior chariot could easily do under a thousand miles in a year. Fewer if it's wet.

You'll see Harleys[*] that are only ever ridden to get their annual MOT, service and tassel refluffing.

My 01 FZS had done just 21K when I bought it now has now done over 40K.

I was recently offered a very sad looking cobwebby Hornet 900 with less than 5K on it for two grand. Tempting.

When I took one of my bikes for it's MOT last year, (with an embarrisingly small annual mileage since the previous MOT), the tester said the majority of larger cc bikes he sees do very little in terms of annual mileage!

I do somewhere about 10k a year, and I've passed on a few bikes in the last few years. I've found buyers to be more concerned about condition than mileage.

Doesn't matter what bike you search for on google though, someone will have sent it around the clocks and it'll be coming back for more.

Had my Multistrada since the middle of December and it's had over 1k put on it already.

If I rode my Triple to work I'd be doing 380-400 a week. I'd consider that normal/slightly above for most commuting bikes.

Depends what you use them for as folk have said. I tend to do about 2k on each of mine per year unless I do long trip, but that's because I can't get out as often as I like because of kids etc. I am typical of the folks I ride with...

Supposition isn't really a problem until it leads to dealers making derisory offers for trade ins, or trying to fob off warranty claims with the risible excuse that "you're riding it too much". We've heard that a few times.

If I had to pick a figure for mean mileage over a typical bike's lifetime, it wouldn't even be as high as 2,000, more like 1,500.

London endurance commuters might skew the numbers a bit, as they often do.

I say buy old bikes only over 10years old, and then mileage is not an issue to affect selling prices once you get to that age really.

I might be wary of buying a sporty two stroke that's done say 50-60k, (not many live that long though) as once a bike has had say half a dozen engine re-build, you can bet things like nuts will be rounded off, studs knackered, and bearing housings getting loose and sloppy maybe. That and many strokers are taken apart and thrown back together by clowns and bodge artists.

When I traded in my 125 Varadero when I passed my test the dealer tried to knock the price down because "15k miles is way too much for a 4 and a half year old bike"

I had to walk out of the showroom and put my lid back on before he had a change of heart and ran out to offer me what I wanted.

same with low mileage cages... if all it's ever done is hot day to the end of the drive and back then then first time you take it out and open the tapes the engine wont like it...
