Not something that's drastically important yet, but we are going to have to have some webspace and a domain would be nice Smile

Anyone got spare webspace, I think stephen among other people offered some previously. If anyone would like to contribute some could yuo list it here, preferabl with what it offers, ie scripts, php, mysql, asp etc.

I can offer:
Unlimited space (well, allmost)
*but*
very slow access as it's through my cable modem, so wouldn't be reasonable for major use.
I will have php & mysql running on apache, but can install otherstuff if needed.

Domain:
I have 8 'domain years' I can use up so I don't mind registering a domain if we can decide on a decent name.

I also have some Unix webspace available although seeing as its for bikechat forums wouldnt it be more pracitcal to have all the email addresses on this domain??

Im sure Kornel wouldnt have a problem with setting up an email account e.g. submit@bikechatforums.com or newsletter@bikechatforums.com, once we have access to this all we need to do is make the newsletter and send it out. I doubt we will need any PHP/FLASH/JAVA/etc programers for now. I would have thought these skills would come in handy if we were making a website but i thought we were going to do the newsletter to start with?

Yes.

PHP etc, can be used to generate the HTML for the newsletter...it's not exactly a mammoth task, but using PHP to maintain a consistent template would be good. It would also allow the editors to do everything through the web browser, rather than needing to FTP, email etc...

what tin said.

Though I reckon the first one it might be better to do everything 'by hand'... just so we can get an idea of what we will and won't want the php to do.

Here's a starter for you:

1. Define the team in charge of picking what goes into one of these newsletters.
2. Set up a forum for people to submit their contributions. The editorial peeps would browse through this and pick out things they liked, to be moved into a seperate forum...
3. ... only accessible by this group, where the content would be edited until it's finalised.
4. Allow people to subscribe and unsubscribe to the newsletter through the forum itself. It could then be delivered to their email or PM account depending on their choice.
5. Archive past newsletters in their own forum (this thing does support html in posts, if sufficiently prodded)

Andrew's been at me to expand BCF for a long time now, but my main problem has been lack of free time. I do, however, have two weeks vacation coming up in December which was earmarked for improving the site.

OK, first things first, who's gonna be in the final list of editors?

After we have determined that, we setup the forum, and then make a "final" list of features for the newsletter...at the same time, we can start work on the layout etc..

I'd quite like to be involved in some computer stuff... but would probably be better to stay to the minor things.

Of course...everyone will have a hand in everything...but it's better to hand out some "core" responsibilities first...
