Bike is due a service, 32k miles so it is the valve clearance ones.
Honda have quoted £400... plus a further £50 if any adjustment is needed

Don't fancy paying that for a service as it is likely to need at least a new back tyre as well

Anyone recommend any good independent bike service places on or around the Wirral?

If that is the going rate for a valve clearance service check then so be it, I am hopeful it can be got a fair bit cheaper though

Thanks

If its any help, I was quoted £150 all in, from a private garage I trust. This was for the fazer so probably not much different to the Hornet in terms of valve clearance checks and adjustment. Shop around?

Main dealer, out of warranty? Not a chance.

Workmate got a CBR600RR (same basic engine) with 40K+ miles, took it to an ex-Honda mechanic working as an independent and the guy wouldn't even take his money for a valve check because they so rarely go out. He agreed to do a compression test while changing the plugs and have a listen to it, all clear.

Well thats the reason you check them at the service intervals. As it might "seem fine" right until its not because your vavles have slowly just got more and more out of spec.

Personally I get them done so I know, not take some bloke's mates uncle on his dads friends forum who did 100k on a engine and never checked them. Your bike, your choice though.

Last check I had on the SV at I think 38k the rear was out by a bit.

i did mine over about 4 days ( 20 hours) .. but not all together as other commitments precluded this ... much time was spent checkin what i had already done...

a trained mechanic would take 5 hours or so ;but he wont be pissin about re-checkin his work as will have done the job many times ;hence the high price for such a service.... the parts were something like £40+

Depends on the year Hornet the OP has.07 onwards uses the 03-06 600RR engine. Pre 07 uses a CBR600F engine from about the stone age.

Personally I wouldn't main dealer it, but I would get them looked at for piece of mind. Yes they rarely go out of adjustment, but I'd still get them looked at.

Same story here. My 07' hornet hit 32k last year, took it to my local legendary independents asking if I should get them looked over for peace of mind, they both looked at each other and laughed. They know the engines well and said you don't need to worry at this interval. (Going on experience).

As above.

Honda or whoever specify service intervals for a reason. Of course we can ignore and take the advice of forum "experts".

If the shim is 'under bucket' and needs replacing because the clearance is too tight, then the cam would need displacing in order to remove the bucket and shim, like on this R1 engine

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Workshop/Picture366.jpg
https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Workshop/Picture360.jpg

Then,if the shims cannot be swapped around, then replacements would need to be sourced

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Workshop/Picture358.jpg

If I did not have a stock of the common sizes for the Exup and R1 then I would buy them from Wemoto, who sell them at a reasonable price.Genuine shims are not cheap Confused

Just to get to measure the clearances takes quite a bit of time, which is all chargeable. So every minute removing the tank/seat/fairing panels/airbox/coils etc soon adds up Shocked
