UK rozzers have been able to do that since 2006 if you don't give a (credible) UK address. I guess that's why they took OP home, even though my understanding is that these powers are almost never used except against commercial truck drivers.

They most certainly didn't put masses more time into the case than it deserves because they're creepy perverts (hello Conzar) who were power tripping on bullying a vulnerable foreign girl. Thought never crossed my mind.
