New MTB tires not spinning true (wheel is)

I bought a new rear tire and inner tube on the weekend.

I cannot get it to fit and spin true. I have tried soapy water on the bead, I have checked the inner tube to ensure it is not bunched inside (it is not), I have pinched and pulled and it simply does not want to sit correctly on the wheel (which spins smooth and true) no matter what I've tried.

Should I kick myself for buying a tire that comes scrunched up inside a box and go to a proper bike store and buy some decent?

Every time I've had this I just had to preserver and keep reseatting it eventually it goes on OK.

Tyre that some scrunched up in a box, otherwise know as tyres with a folding bead, aren't the problem.

It sounds like the tyre just isn't seated correctly on the rim, as Chris says you've got to keep trying and you'll get it right eventually.

Get one side the of the tyre on, put the tube in a partially inflate it to help it sit correctly on the tyre whilst you get the other side of the tyre on.

What tyres are they?

Get it on the wheel. Stick about 10psi in it.

Make sure you don't have any sort of nut attached to the valve stem. This is a common mistake. Only use that nut to hold the valve in place while you fit the tyre

Push the valve stem up into the tyre as far as you can.

Work around the tyre gripping the tyre in your fingers and rocking it from side to side.

Stick another 10psi in it. Repeat.

When you get up to 50 or so. Check the bead is seated fully by checking for an equal gap between the rim and the line going right around the sidewall of the tyre.

If it's still not seating, take it right up to the maximum pressure. Or further. I've had to bung 80psi in an MTB tyre before to get it fully seated.

I've been doing what you describe, I guess I'll do it again and see if it finally decides to pop into place.

The issue is that the line by the bead (the tell tale line?) sometimes is visible, sometimes isn't. I squeeze and pull it into place and it goes back.
