A couple of southerners came to Liverpool and collected my ZXR400 today, thus leaving me bikeless.

I've been offered a L reg TT600, and the insurance is pretty cheap.

Are they any good?

Nice riding position, brilliant handling.
On the open road engine sweet, around town it has an annoying flat spot that will probably drive you mad.

I've heard that, but it is easily fixed with a remap which costs pennies for the cable.

I have the Speed Four, which is basically the same bike, minus the fairing.

As has been said, great handling and fairly comfortable. I would have thought the TT600 would be a little better, comfort-wise, due to the fairing.

One of my biggest complaints is the low down fuelling. You'll pull away and there'll be nothing, nothing, nothing, and then all of a sudden it will surge forward. Apparently, the Speed Four fuelling is an improvement, but I can't honestly see how it could be any worse low down.

My other complaint is the brakes. When working properly, they work great, but after a bit of use they go very spongy. I find taking the calipers off and pushing the pistons back in helps a lot, but has to be done again a couple of weeks later.

Overall, I do actually really like the bike and it has taken me on two EuroJollys without any significant problems.

Sounds great with an aftermarket exhaust too Thumbs Up

If Cansa is talking about a remap, it must have FI rather than carbs, then it can't be the Yamaha TT600. It's either a Triumph or a Yamaha and neither sounds likely due to either age (L plate for a bike produced in 2000>?) or lack of FI.

If it's anything like the Speed Four it'll be good enough for road riding. Friend had one and rated it better than his ZX6R B1H for the road, he's a very capable rider too.

Friend on his Speed Four (with my older brother close behind):

I had one as my first big bike. Mechanically speaking it was a dog and almost everything needed fixing during the time I had it (generator rewound, new side casing, pissing oil everywhere, rectifier failure, new battery etc etc). It was easy to ride though and the seating position was pretty comfortable. It had a flat spot but that is pretty easy to work around.

If its cheap and it gets you back on the road again take a punt and give it a go.

not as easy as "fixed with a remap"

they run great, flat out

it's the lower end fuelling that the magazine's moaned about

true there is a map for earlier models to help, but latterly it was sorted with different cams, which you can't retro fit to the earlier model afaik

maybe worth checking the chassis number with someone in the know

I had one, it was a total lemon. Fueling is shite and if its an early one its not just a software fix!
Mine had water leaks, oil leaks, would stall when coming up to roundabouts etc.
I finally lost interest when number 3 crank bearing let go when doing some hooning. Apparently there was a whole batch that went out with this problem.
They do handle fine and stop but I would never touch one again. In 6 months of owning it, it spent 3 of those in places like Jack Lillys.
Once it had its crank fettled, it was traded in immediately for a CBR600 F sport.

I had two.

The first one I had was a damaged repairable, so it was pre f*cked when I got it. The second one was a later one with the body coloured air intakes and the single colour colourscheme. It did have a niggly flat spot around 2500rpm, but I learned to ride around it quickly. It was like a missing tooth, most of the time you don't notice it, but when you know it's there you keep checking for it.

Mine had a couple of recalls, one for plastic fuel connectors which cracked and were replaced with anodised alloy ones. The rear shock bolt was also found to be too long and rubbed on the wiring look. This was also replaced on a recall.

I liked mine, the only downside for me was that for it to get properly interesting you had to hammer it at quite high speeds. The speed four I had later was better in this regard and the same was true of a CBR600 of the same era. So it's just a faired unfaired preference thing.

If you can get one cheap enough then I'd go for it. They are fast enough, smooth, handle amazingly, have an excellent riding position and can munch miles with the best of them. It's second only to the 1999 CBR600F as an all rounder IMO and really that's just down to that little injection glitch, which can be improved on the later ones with a map. The earlier two tone paint models with the black intake tubes are harder to fix because the later ones had different cams too.

That said, if it's cheap enough... Go for it.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

It was on my shortlist back in 2000 along with the ZX6R, and Thunder cat. All brand new at the time and were all within a few £££ at the most. I liked the TT best for its cheaper insurance and rarity on the road. The Kawasaki was the best bike of the three all told IMO, and also better than the alloy framed CBR 600, which after a test ride I'd not have one for free.

It sounds like it's fairly easy to ride around the lower end stumble on the triumph, and unlike the CBR which had a huge hole from 6-7k rpm which is were it's not good enough on a road bike for it to play up, as it's normal riding engine speeds.
