hey,

i'm having problems with my battery on my cbr 400rr gull arm. i bought a new battery recently, charged it and a day later after a few rides the battery died and i had to push start it. i charged the battery again and the same thing happened. i asked around some people said it's the rectifiers fault and that the battery isnt' getting charged while the bike is running..

any suggestions before i go spend money on a rectifier?

Make sure the connections to the battery are clean and tight, also check the other end of the battery earth lead where it bolts to the frame or wherever.

Charge the battery again and then run th bike and blip the throttle with the lights on - they should get brighter. If not then you've got alternator or rectifier problems.

Take multimeter, turn on engine, rev to 4000rpm and check the voltage coming back into the batter (charging voltage)

It should be 13.XX - 14.XX regardless of if any/all the electrics are on.

If it is lower, it's probably the Reg/rec, although the same symptoms were shown and my stator windings had fried. Could be either, but more likely Reg/rec.

Check wiring and conectors for good contacts. See if batter holds its charge, both on and off the bike. Batt could be fecked. Don't rule anything out untill you know 100%

PS I have Gullarm and have had same problems. Both my stator and Reg/rec went, and not at the same time either. Charging problems on those bikes are plentyful. N stuff... Rolling Eyes

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

I haven been told this could be the case. IME the reg/rec went and the battery held up (after many time being completly run down, and charged fully up), so I think you should be testing the battery as well. See above post. Batt could be buggered, or it could be fine. Thumbs Up

Good point though Instigator

My other half has a 400 aero (pre gull arm) and the reg/rec is buried in behind the block, it also has no cooling fins so there is a tendency for them to overheat. When hers went the battery got cooked (which was another £40). The rec/rec is a load dumping type, as fitted to lots of other bikes (permanent magnet alternators) and I replaced it with one off an africa twin that I had in my box of bits. The new reg/rec is heavilly finned and has a large heat sink, I also mounted it under the side panel where it can get some cool air. There hasnt been a problem since.
