So, following on from the thread link below....

https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=302474

It's just over a year ago from when I originally caught the ghey. I enjoyed riding the Bobber with its low down riding position and the whole ergonomics of the thing. A few months after obtaining it, with the threat of commuting via bike looming, I sold it on to obtain a work horse.

Now I'm in a position where I can have another machine without having to think about how the elements will destroy it! I've thought long and hard about posting this as I know how much these particular machines are not liked by the majority of this forum, but I've got to come clean sooner or later. I've lubed up and am prepared for a grilling and know the haters gonna hate.

So, here she is in completely standard form........ but not for long!

My Harley Davidson Street Bob Special Edition.

It needs longer forks. If you're going down that route, you may as well go the whole ho.. nine yards.

Oh and get a rain cover, or it will look like this uncovered 2012 Harley in no time.

Rain?! It will never see any rain! It's kept in a garage so is out of the elements so to speak. It's not covered in chrome, most parts are blacked out which is what attracted me to this particular model.

Erm I like the crinkle Matt black finish on the motor. The metallic red paint work is a nice shade and that's it really.

I'm a twat that doesn't understand these things and as such thinks a nicer finished and better looking pretender like the Honda VT750, is a better bike and I'd be one of those sad pretenders riding around with the wrong badge and thinking it was still cool.

Hope it does what you want it to do, and you enjoy it mate as that's all that matters.

Personally I'd turn down any Harley for something like a nice Honda nighthawk or similar.

You're not a twat at all, your preferences are just different to mine! I must say, in the past i've also looked at VT750's and Yamaha XV's and thought "why the hell would you buy a Harley over one of these more refined bikes!!" The build quality of the Harley is rubbish, from what I understand it has to be really well looked after in order to keep it's appearance reasonable. The brakes are awful! You can almost feel the brake pipes expanding under pressure.

But......

and it's a big but........

all of a sudden something has clicked and I understand what they are all about, and why people buy them.

Again, it's just personal preference.

Thanks Smile I do enjoy riding it. I love the agricultural feel to the machine! Which is strange as I've always avoided it like the plague in the past and stuck with Japanese refinement.

She's an absolute beauty, I'm eyeing up an 883 or a forty-eight myself after only riding jap bikes previously. Test rode an 883 on the weekend and finally 'got it' as you said, there's just something about a Harley...it's a HARLEY!

I disagree on their reliability and keeping them in good condition, from what I've read the newer ones are just as reliable as jap bikes. The build quality on the 883 was actually really good, I've seen worse on Honda and kawasaki.

Anyway, I'm waffling. You'll love the thing, especially for in the sun! Get some Remus cans on it and it'll be perfect!

The other most kindest thing I can say about the HD sportsters is that they look fairly minimalist, which is good and like they are just so engine, seat, peanut tank and some bits of tubing wrapped around them.

Componentry wise I've never understood why they use so much in house stuff and parts, it must be for style, as outsourcing parts would have to be cheaper I would think?

It is indeed like a meaty Sportster! It's not overly massive, but has a bit more punch.

Glad you "got it" so to speak. Did take a good few years for it to click with me! The '48 is a great looking bike Smile

It's now sporting some Vance and Hines pipes Smile Sounds so much better than the standard ones!

Yes, it may be for the styling. It could be cost effective using in house parts as they may use the parts throughout their range, like brake calipers for example.

More pictures to match category, and how fast it go?

I notice the rear disk is more chunky than the front but then remembered my cruiser and how the front end locks up easily compared with other styled bikes.

Harley's are very much not about speed, so how fast it goes is not relevant! Despite this, it is a torque monster so does shift.

As for the brakes, it won't lock up - they have ABS.

Edit to add: You've had a fair few bikes in the past. How does this one compare? It seems a totally different choice from your usual.

How does it compare!? It's like chalk and cheese!

The Japanese bikes are so well refined in comparison, but that's part of the Harley following. That said, this is the first bike I've owned with so much technology on board! ABS brakes, keyless ignition, self cancelling indicators, digital rev gauge and gear indicator built in.......

Interestingly, I'm not sure how they actually work! They do actually cancel after you have leaned (even though the lean isn't that low!) They don't cancel on a specific time period if you are thinking they are timed - they are directly linked to the actual turn on the bike.
