Well, after nearly 13 years, we've just had to put our dog down due to various problems with him.

The pain is un-fucking bearable. I've had dogs around me my entire life, the first time I was 10 years old and I knew that dog since birth.

I'm 23 now - yet the loss of Harry is ripping my heart out (not trying to sound emotional here). My Mother is also devastated - she'll be sleeping at night without him.

I'm really lost, not knowing how to cope with it. I'm alright now, but I'm predicting I'll lose my shit at work or something and I don't like showing other people my emotions (man thing I guess)

Can anybody relate? Really could use some advice/other stories.

You need another pup or rescue dog.
You might think you don't but you do.

I lost my Akita cross last December after 14 years. I was devastated. Didn't think I would ever replace him. Only a couple of weeks later I was asked to foster an Akita for a short time. He's still with me and he's going nowhere.

Agree with Doggone but think he should have changed his user name to leave that message.

I think I'll be more of a wreck when my pooch finally passes away than when some of my distant family do!

I'd probably need a few days of work to get over it at least...

Never thought about it but when I joined with that name it popped in my head because our dog had gone but only missing, she used to be scared of thunder and was hiding!
So that really is what it meant at the time.

Dogs! Bloody things are heartbreakers on four legs.
I've been fortunate to have lived with some excellent canines. <Correct use of the term excellent.

Wenlock (my girlfriends dog) was once seen sat on the passenger seat in Tesco's carpark with a small crowd of people looking and laughing. Wenny was very carefully unwrapping each Ferrero Rocher and happily munching the contents.

She once escaped from the farm and my girlfriend awoke to the sound of a herd of bullocks baying in the distance. Wenny was rounding them up. She'd catch a rabbit and just as you got near her she'd crunch it dead. She escaped and was found in nextdoors kitchen where she'd stolen a full Salmon and ate it, same thing happened but this time it was a full roast cooling on the side.

Picture a traditional English garden party in a small garden, the guests are sipping drinks in the sunshine and remarking on the bedding plants when Wenny arrives and curls out a log in the middle of the lawn. Completely changed the atmosphere. She would also wee in puddles..squat n drop we called it.

I met her when she was good, she must have been about 5. My girlfriend had been patient and trained her, she had a superb temperament for being a P.A.T (Pets as therapy) dog so that's what she did.
Take her anywhere and she'd behave perfectly. Kids could play with her, she didn't fret or fuss.
Loved mixing with other dogs and loved playing with my dog.
She got the big C and it was the aggressive type. Some time later we booked her in for the needle of death.

On the drive to the vets we pulled over and I went to the shop. Got her a big box of Ferrero Rocher and unwrapped them for her.

I could fill a screen full of text about the positives of my dogs and maybe a few paragraphs about the negatives.
My Tilly is getting bad on her legs now, we know there isn't long and I'm getting ready but know I will be in bits when the day comes and the following months. A proper bereavement like I did with Wenlock.
Guess I'm just a bit soft.

They offer so much for so little. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I'd like to tell you that it all goes away, but I'd be lying. It's been 8 years now for me. We lost 2 of our dogs within months of each other (April and September). i still get pangs, still miss them, still wish they were here. Lost my cat in 2014 too - she used to cuddle me for an hour after I got in from work.

Much as I really want another cat or dog, I can't bring myself to do it so I've taken to donating to Dogs Trust to help look after one of their dogs until it gets rehomed.

Sorry for your loss GG.

Allow yourself to grieve, forget the man thing, be sad for as long as you need to.

Most people understand how hard it is to lose a much-loved pet, they'll understand.

Time passing helps, I'd advise not trying to get another straight away, you and your Mum need to get over this first, then another dog will be a pleasure and a substitute, not grief therapy.

I've had 5 dogs in my life and it doesn't get any easier when they go,

My present GSD is 12 and he has really started to show his age in the last 6 months. He getting wobbly on his back legs and his sight and hearing is going so I know it's on the cards he won't see out this year.

I will be a mess when he goes as will the wife who, although she makes out she isn't that bothered, I catch sitting on the floor grooming the dog and talking to him like he can understand.

I have no answers. Some sky fairy fucked up when they only gave a dog 10 to 15 years of life.

When our old dog was put down, on my birthday I must add, I shed more tears than when my dad died. Not because I hated my dad, far from it, but because, just because..

It gets easier over time like all grief. 2 1/2 years later we thought the time was right for another so off we went down to the local Greyhound rehoming kennels and got ourselves a dog that is so stupid she couldn't even run around in circles without getting lost. All is well again. Smile

I had the unenviable job of taking my dad's dog on his last journey.
My dad was too old to take him and the dog himself was quite old and pretty weak, so much so that only a tiny amount of the actual injection was enough to send the old dog on his way.
I wasn't exactly over the moon to have been chosen for the task but I also wasn't prepared at all for the wave of sadness just after the event.
I don't mind admitting getting a bit emotional as I type, even though its been a few years since and it wasn't even my bloody dog!

It's done me a bit of a favor however, my dog is into three figures of doggy years now which may or may not give us many more human years together but at least I know exactly what to expect when the time comes.

I was more devastated by the death of my Angus cat when him and my mother died within a month of each other, I still miss wee Angus.

I have said goodbye to five cats in as many years and it hurts my heart, I still have four and now have two bassets, I get sad when I think that i will go through the grieving process each time with them. The love you feel for your pet is like nothing else.

give your self a little time then let a rescue dog choose you, I believe that people that love their pet so fiercely has that additional space in their heart to bestow happiness on another animal that deserves the love you have to offer.

Over the years I have lost two wonderful furry members of my family (one cat and one dog) and both times, like everybody else on this thread, the pain was awful.
However , time is a great healer and eventually you will remember them with a smile.
I still to this day, smile when I think about my idiot dog running off down the garden with my shoe and hiding it so well it was never found??

About a year ago, Billy was put to sleep. I had saved him (sort of) when he was six weeks old. Through someone I worked with, I heard of these dogs that were going to the home because they were having issues finding homes for them. I got him when he could fit into my palm (black lab mixed with something else). When I moved, and my landlords wouldnt accept pets, he went to live with my mum and dad (who were still getting over losing their own dog a few years previous). He was a godsend for my parents, keeping them company, being a guard dog and also best friend for all the kids in the family. He lived to 15, and now has his own urn. I still get sad when I visit and he doesnt come bounding across.

About 8 years ago (when I moved in with the mrs), we adopted a blue merle collie (Parents wouldnt give up Billy!). 14 years old but still really sprightly. Only with us for a year, but used to lay under my (step)sons bed at night to keep him company, and could still jump 5 feet in the air when you picked up his lead. Got hit by a car when he escaped out the front door, and not long later was diagnosed with lymphoma. I ride past the place where he was put to sleep most days, and most days I still get a pang.

It will always hurt, but when you have had 10+ years with someone who is as loving and loyal as a dog, it is to be expected. I now have two Cavalier king charles spaniels, and you cannot believe how affectionate they are. One of them is my boys best friend. Dogs are amazing, and we are blessed to be able to have them in our lives.

Sorry for your loss, dude.

I know the feeling, just over two years ago when Oscar left us, we said never again, but now we have Oscars great great nephew from the same breeders, although Harvey is a skinny get, Oscar was cremated and when my dad died in February this year he always wanted Oscar to go with him so the funeral home sorted that, now there together. We will never forget him and I have his collar on my bed post since he passed, if I turnover it jingles and his harness and last teddy I got him in my closet, I still shed a tear when I think of him as I am now, we got him when I was going through a bad time in my life, i miss him so much.
But here is Harvey very much a daft as his uncle was at two.

Take it easy

Thanks everybody.

As mentioned before, and quite rightly so, dogs are amazing.

I can never love a human as much as I love dogs. Some people would call me silly for suggesting that...however dogs love you unconditionally and ask for very little in return.

It's hard getting used to having a clean carpet and nobody harassing me for food (basset hounds are a greedy breed)

Fucking animals, playing with your emotions and shit..

I know how you feel.

Last year (aged 23), I lost the two dogs that we had for 17 and 15 years respectively in about 5 months. The younger one, a pointer, was such a character and I absolutely loved him to bits, I had essentially grown up with him.

He was still quite active until one morning I woke up and walked out to the landing to watch him struggling to get up to say hello as he always did and he looked terrified - turns out he had just had a stroke and his motor skills were all over the place.

I've never seen my dad so upset and weeping as we had to let him go, I'll never forget it. My dad absolutely loved pointers and couldn't be without one, and he had found a local breeder that night with pups and brought a new one back the next day.

It was going well with the pup's training and he was getting on well within the household, then my dad suddenly fell ill and died within an hour, only a few days after Christmas whilst I was on holiday in Australia. That was proper shit.

Luckily I was still living at home (and will remain so for the foreseeable) so my mum and I are training him together. He still howls when I leave the house like our own pointer! Dogs are awesome, you never learn to live without them Thumbs Up

Wotcha.

That's the way to do it . . . I did ( all those years ago ) and never regretted it.

Having said that, I've never had another dog . . . .I wouldn't want to go through the loss again. Sad

I cried for 2 days when I lost my last dog.

I had, had him for 15 years and I loved him.

4 years later I still miss him.

I'm sorry for your loss.
