New wireless router, will devices connect automatically?

I'm setting up a new router for use at home (woo, high speed!) but it's not currently at that location, because reasons.*

My old system is a DSL modem connected to a switch with a mini wireless access point.

The new system is an Asus VDSL modem router with wireless. I could just plug it into the switch and everything should work as normal but the wireless functionality on the new router is way better (faster, better range) than the access point so I'd be best sacking off the access point and using the router.

Question is this. If I give the new router the same name and use the same passkey as the access point, will everything that currently connects to my access point connect to it instead? Or will I need to change the ID of the modem in some other way (MAC adress etc). Or will I just have to log everything on to the new router with a new ID?


*Mainly because I can't now access the internet at home to get the setup information for the modem because I need the modem I'm setting up to access the internet. It all gets a bit recursive. (Open the crate with the crowbar contained within.)

If all the connection details are the same, then should do. Devices (in my experience) look at the SSID name, then connect with the saved settings, not at something such as the MAC.

I did the reverse of what you're doing to setup a WiFi printer that had its cables lost. Changed the SSID and encryption settings to what I knew were on the old router, changed the SSID and encryption settings via printer web GUI, then changed the router SSID and encryption settings back to what they were.

Worked a charm

I also did what you're doing now when I turned the WiFi off on the Sky Hub and used my own router instead, because I couldn't be bothered to reconfigure all the devices.

I've done this recently switching from Sky to TalkTalk, kept the same SSID etc, but whilst my phones connected without issue none of my computers did.

If I recall correctly you're Debian derived computers so you may find you have to create it as a new connection. I'm unsure if Windows computers connect or not as I've no switched it on for over a year.

It did work by just changing the SSID and passphrase on the new router to match the old wirless point.

All wireless devices picked up the new router and connected. Including The wifes linux laptop (Mint Mate).

Actually,after all my faffing about, the new router just sorted its own shit out. All I had to do was plug it in and enter the user name and password, it auto-detected everything else.

Asus DSL-N17U so far.

Handy to know as I'm looking for a new router. I'm guessing it's the fucking wank router TalkTalk throws out.

I ended up using the TalkTalk one as a modem and the Sky one as a wireless router.

It's one I chose for myself as being a fairly inexpensive but flexible VDSL modem/router. I like ASUS as a company. Their gear is generally cheap but punches above its weight.

I don't like using gear supplied by the ISP as it's often locked down to their settings and I don't trust them not to have left themselves the option to dial into it, with all the security implications that comes with.

I really only needed a wired modem by itself because I've got the rest of the networking covered but they are preversely expensive compared to a basic modem/router.
