Oneplus Dash Charge

So I am looking for a new phone after 2 1/2 years with my trusty Nexus 5 which is still good and handles everything, I just want more speed and onboard memory.

Oneplus advertise "Dash charge" which from what I can gather is just charging at 4A rather than 2A which my Nexus does. The issue is they want you to use their own expensive charger and cable. They also say they have moved some of the charging circuitry to the adapter so the phone doesn't get hot. They have not released any information on this unit and it seems like it would be fairly easy to make one.

I figure the phone must have some circuitry built in because you can still charge it from a normal type-c connector at a lower current.

So does anyone have any clue what is going on or have one of these dash charge units willing to do some experiments?

I have a oneplus 3 with the dash charger set up.

Its monumentally fast charging, it does output 3.9A constantly... its got 100% battery in about 50 minutes, they say it does 60~% over half an hour so yeah, 50 mins sounds right.

The adaptor itself is a proper sealed unit, its big though. Big enough to be a pain in the arse when you want to remove it and you've put it out of sight etc.

Samsung do their version of fast charge as well, except it runs at 9v 1.67a and also charges monumentally fast. The bonus is the fast charger comes free with the phone and is also adaptive, in that it will revert to a normal 5v 2a charge if it detects an older device. This is for a Galaxy S7.

I tend not to use it as the phone gets fairly hot, and its not hard to keep the phone topped up with a bit of forward planning. This time I want to care for the battery long term which fast charging doesn't help with.

My old nexus 5 battery is fairly rekt after a lifetime of wireless charging in a car cradle in the sun while running google maps. It only lasts half a day now, still a good phone mind
