They're not the only ones selling 22mm chains.
"*New* Protector 22mm Titan absolutely huge uncroppable hardened steel security chain (select length below), plus *new* Squire Stronghold SS80CS ultra heavy duty padlock. The biggest and beefiest production security chain in the world, as far as we know, plus the world's strongest production padlock with the NW4 high tech extreme cylinder. See the photos for the superbly close fit between the lock and the chain - Minimum clearance for any type of attack, even including angle grinders!"

And this marks the point where we can only recommend Pragmasis products. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

you know what, you are right. i'll stick to occasionally reading when google turns up a forum thread interesting here, but aside from the other guy that likes to keep up with security. By and large seem a mean lot Oo.
And about the whole pragmasis vs almax thing.
I like the fact pragmasis chains can be linked at any point, but unless you buy a really long chain so you can link the one around some street furniture and then around your frame, thereby getting more length out of your chain.
And yeah, both protector and almax 16mm+ chains are not bolt croppable, but more attacks are occurring with angle grinders/cutting torches the chains just buy you time for your paging alarm/ gps with text devices to alert you to (in my case) take and old hockey stick to chase them off with.
However,
on pistonheads forums, steve from pragmasis says his chains are comparable to almax ones - they even use the same heating company for their chains.
and maxine on one of the ride forums says almax chains are quadrupled heated using a special process.
and Alex from almax told me the director of that company developed the method of heat hardening almax chains and will NEVER share or use that method for anyone else.
FINALLY, captaincropper from that same thatcham/sold secure video:
" J.R Knuth3 years ago
How good do you consider Protector 16mm or Protector 19mm? Are they worth their price?
CaptainCropper3 years ago
Unless things have changed since I tested one, then no they aren't any good. Main issues being the very poor weld on the link and hugely variable levels of hardening, on one chain you will get a very brittle link and a very soft link, this is because they are heat treated in a pile rather than carefully laid out on racks like quality chains are. For the money involved, you'd be better off with an Almax or something similar."
And paint me cynical.. I doubt manufacturing costs have gone down so likely still doing it.
Finally, when alex agreed to finally put to the test a REAL bolt cutting attack on my pewag chain. (THAT video will also be released, cost me a headache to get hold of the stuff that is only as effective as an oxford monster - both {edit } PATRICK from pragmasis and alex from almax told me it would be, I now have proof.
I travelled 585kms each way to have it done and pick up a new chain (I have had three attempts on my bike in last 8 weeks, I wanted something that would make them shrink at the thought, and would buy me time if they tried grinder or cutting torch attacks. (they are becoming more popular, there already videos on youtube where they are used in u.k.). (and don't tell me to get a dog...I'm from south africa where its almost bloody routine to poison them . |

It's just so I can decide on whether to sleep naked or not, and also test if I need to leave the chip pan on low or medium.
Thanks x |
That is actually less of a consideration then how long it would last against a cutting torch (yes I live in london ><).
Short answer is longer then a minute a link with a plugged in grinder (and two cuts needed) - I say this as case hardened 3/8" takes a full minute per side, and likely longer still with a battery one - PER LINK. With the cutting torch I'm less sure. I've no doubt it can cut it, but the extra thickness works as a heatsink and until I get a chance to properly test this - I'm counting on around a minute. (perfect scenario - which it won't be, and without tripping any other "layers" before hand- which isn't possible, so it would be a minute in the "middle" of previous layers).
The reason i say "counting" is because you cannot ever defeat the determined thief , BUT, you can defeat the THEFT.
I layer security to buy time for a paging alarm (spy 5000 in my case) and an alarmed gps that will text me (I've given it a special ringtone). This will notify me, and I layer the security in such a way they will HAVE to disturb things (firing off the notifying security measures) to grind or torch the security in place.
I have ordered two more 3m lengths and will sacrifice a link or two getting these two means tested. I'll get my locksmith to grind it, and an engineer friend to torch one when I get time.
Like you, I like to *know* these things.
On the plus side, any scrotes that come better come geared ><.
The final security measure is me (and likely my neighbour lol) with an old hockey stick and an unpleasant disposition! |
