Evening

Been rewiring the KH tonight and as I've been under the impression it was a 6v mode (based on the VIN it's a K5) I had purchased battery and bulbs to suit (former field bike came with no auxiliaries or battery).

Tonight however when testing the loom I've found the voltage going up to 20v (at idle puts out 6v), I'm under the impression this is due to a non functioning reg/rec but just wanted to confirm if it was a 6v could it put out this many volts? Just been advised it could be a 12v

look at the battery, should be YB3LB which is 12V, not only is the reg rec knackered but if you keep using it the alternator will die aswell

the regulator keeps the output of the alternator at a controlled constant, when it malfunctions the alternator will work flat out until it burns out

AC voltage before the RR could easily be far higher than 6V. For example (OK, a 12V system) think the Aprilia AF1 lists the charging voltage before the RR as being 45~70V ac (from memory).

All the best

Interesting stuff, explains the output.

Also there is not battery, it was used as a field bike with a wire going from magneto to the coil, there was no other wiring besides that, for the year, it should be a 12v but according to the model history (K5) should be 6v.

Without a functioning reg/rec is it impossible to check the generated output to determine the voltage? Before I go getting another reg/rec or bulbs, battery and such for the wrong voltage.

Hi

Unless you want 100% authenticity, I would be tempted to wire it up as 12V. Makes things far easier for spares these days (such as when you need a bulb at a petrol station).

All the best

Katy

Probably should have gone down the route of converting to 12v but I've left it a little late for that (intending on using it for an event coming up soon).

Tested the regulator last night and it seems that not only is it the wrong fitment (4 pin instead of 3 for that model of KH) the diodes must have burnt out too so sourcing an alternative, in theory could I use any 6v regulator provided I identify and match the pins correctly?
