Just passed Mod 2 today. Would like a Bandit - anyone gone that way for first 'big bike' - and got decent insurance cover.

Have a 125 but not even 1 years no claim bonus yet!

I am mid 50s - if that will help with cover!

Insurance is a lottery.

Either wait until the current policy is up and the no claims bonus has been gained or buy the bike now and cough up for admin fee's etc mid policy to swap the new bike over. Comments of some insurers not swapping 125 for bigger bikes so keep that in mind, no personal experience.

Google motorbike insurance comparison website and run a dummy quote for the furthest date possible with 1 years NCB and see what you get as an idea of what it would cost come renewal.

Worse case buy bike, cancel current insurance and new policy with 0 ncb on Bandit if you're unable to wait.

You can do the rest yourself..................... Wink

PS, the Bandit also comes in over 50's user friendly size of 600cc!!!!

Cheers Thumbs Up

I would get bored with the 600 too quickly. Heart set on the 1250

Thanks. I am thinking new policy - as I will probably keep the 125 for my son.

That's an option but I'd run a dummy quote on a comparison website before making it the final one given that personally I'd much rather have the no claims than not, every little discount on insurance helps and all.

So let me get this straight.
This is your first big bike and you seem to think you can't scare yourself senseless or kill yourself on a 600 Bandit....
Interesting Rolling Eyes

I spent 4 days solid on the 1250 including Mallory Park circuit as part of a direct access course - and did my Mod 1 on it. I am also the type of person who buys a car (or bike) and sticks with it rather than frequent changes. Having experienced the 1250 and the 650 - I just know that within a short time I will be hankering after the machine that I really want. I agree it might sound a bit daft, but....
The insurance costs might influence all this of course.

I like the ergonomics of the bandits. Mines a mkII 600. performance is adequate, handling is very planted and reassuring. It's also really comfortable and the only bik i've ridden that I'd even considered b-roading it from doncaster to the new forest in a day. It's plenty good two-up and with hard boxes on the sides and tail they can carry a ridiculous amount of stuff.

The 12 survives because it's a damn good bike and is brilliant value. there are better bikes out there, but not for the same money.

Bandits do seem to carry a bit of an insurance hike. I'm high risk due to my annual mileage, address and employment situation which doesn't help, but I found my bandit costing me about 40% more than a cruiser of similar capacity, that said quite a few sports tourers were similar money to insure. VFR800, bandit 12, Fazer, Hornet all within £50 of each other.
