Hi

My fzr400 (3tj) has developed an issue of some kind! I've noticed te headlight is really dim so i decided to test the voltage coming from the battery whilst the engine is running and it's only reading 12 odd volts and the voltage doesn't increase with the higher rpm's of the engine, neither does the brightness of the headlight, i fitted a new reg/rec and that hasn't seemed to of helped and upon further inspection i found hat the 3 spaded connector block coming off the stator has melted a bit, i just put this down to the reg/rec being faulty so I've now put a new connector block and spade connectors on the wire but still no joy, resistance tested the stator and that appears to be fine, could it be the magneto pick up thingy ?

Also another thing to add is that i wanted to see if the engine would stay running with the battery disconnected but as soon as i pulled the positive terminal off the batter the engine cut out which i don't believe is normal? surely it would stay running and the lights would still work but the brightness would fluctuate with the rpm's of the engine ?

I look forward to hearing your suggestions! thanks!

How many wires and colours have you from the magneto to the reg/rec?

Have you checked the 3 yellow wires on the alternator/stator side to see if they're putting out 60v a.c.?

iirc it's about 4k rpm you should see this reading but different motorcycle models may vary

There are 3 white wires coming off the stator and it's a 4 pin plug that goes into the reg/rec

I'm going to try this later and see what reading i get, do all 3 wires need to read 60v ac individually whilst the negative of the multimeter is ground to the battery ?

The 3 white wires will be the 3 phase alternator feeding the battery via the reg/rec,
as spottedtango suggested check 1+2, 1+3 and 2+3 with the meter on A/C setting.
