I have a GSX 600F 1989. I use this for commuting to and from work and for a bit of fun at the weekend. Now when ridden hard in second gear the bike slips into neutral. Is this likely to be an expensive fix? the bike has done 78000 miles and is in good condition. I can ride through the problem by just changing up into third. Has anyone any experience with this type of issue? I am not looking to have my wallet drilled into for £300 or more as that is the sum worth of the bike. Is there a cheap an easy fix? it has a 6 speed box, 1 down and 5 up.

Check your clutch is properly adjusted although it's more likely to be a problem within the gearbox itself if it's just popping out of 2nd and therefore a relatively costly fix especially if you're paying garage labour rates.

I would guess something has worn beyond the acceptable level in the gear box. Selector arms and drum, something like that.

Choices -

Garage? - no not worth it
DIY? - Engine out, strip down and repair or obtain a second hand low mileage engine and replace (I would do that)
Sell - Penny Coin
Live with - Save moneys for another bike.

Thank you Polarbear and tom_e, I think I am going to live with it, just checked clutch cable all is good. It has just gone through an MOT and I have had the bike 10 years so I am not that worried about living with it. I was hoping it was something simple, apparently not Sad

Run it until gearbox shits itself, fit B12 engine.
