As I haven't committed to a Vive or Rift yet, I got the Note 7 and Gear VR v2.0 last month as a kind of, "go between" to see what that was like (plus I was due an upgrade on the phone anyway).
After mooching about in the Oculus Home app which auto boots when you plug the phone in to the headset, I was quite impressed.
Then after some more messing about, I found a very cool way of using your Gear VR with Steam VR.
First, you need an app for £1.19 - EZ Package Disabler.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hecorat.packagedisabler&hl=en
This allows you to disable Oculus Home loading as soon as you clip the phone in the headset. There could possibly be free versions that do similar but this is the one I went with as it allows me to disable loads of bloatware imposed on me by Samsung.
Next you need an app on your phone called Riftcat Vridge
https://riftcat.com/vridge
There's a trial version of it which allows 15 minutes of usage before you have to restart the app but it's enough to give you a taste of what's going on but I bought the app for 15 euros.
You also need to download the Vridge client for your PC and register a free account.
Then it's time to boot up Steam and load Steam VR (Download it if you haven't got it). Riftcat Vridge takes over and tricks Steam in to thinking you have a Vive or Rift connected, in this case, it's more like the Rift as you can use your 360 controller with it (Vive has the controllers).
That's it, you can install Steam VR games and streams them to your Gear VR over WiFi or USB 3.0, whichever you want.
I also paid for Virtual Desktop which is very cool. Currently waiting on Warthunder (Free to play VR game) to download and play that.
Thing about all this VR stuff is, none of this is easily found online, it was only via a series of YouTube videos did I get all this working. |

I also got the samsung VR this week from pc world..£42 for my edge 7 as we had done some 360 underground photos for a local mine and it worked well! I've only tried it for a few hours but have to say its better than i expected and some of the 360 war videos done in afganistan by some war zone reported are a hell of a lot more scary as rounds and mortars are coming in than the std 2d stuff. Not often your searching around to try and see where its coming from!!
Needless to say my 10 yr old now wants the ps4 vr set so ill be interested in how you guys that have it get on!!
On a plus point today I found out you can use them when flying a dji drone and the head tracking moves the camera as you look up and down in real time so thats another interesting use I'm going to try with the inspire .......should be interesting as i know a few guys who dog fight WWII RC planes this way big bonus for the last use is you can use a £15 pair of goggles with a phone @1080p and they are miles better than the usual goggles which are at 480
This could get expensive fast!! ____________________ Current bikes...cbr929, KDX200's, Rd125lc mk2, RGV250's |

I saw an ad for something called a Parrot Disco. Silly name, but I had heard of Parrot before.
I would love one, but have no use whatsoever for one. Guess I don't really have a use for any VR, just for funzies
As for PSvr, we have one on order, don't even own a PS4 yet!, gonna get a Pro, due out in November.
Would prefer an XBox personally, but they aren't VR'ing til this time next year it looks like.

Just to add to my post as well mate, even at the least, get that EZ Package Disabler, it allows you to disable Oculus Home from auto loading which also allows you to use apps from the Playstore as they are all "Google Cardboard" compatible but you can't use them because Oculus Home boots automatically every time you put it in the headset.
Oh and ahem, https://www.pornhub.com/fun/android - For educational purposes of course (need to disable Oculus Home) |

Just bought the ps vr as I have more money than sense,
Currently downloading demos and a few games to try out tonight, I'll give an opinion in a few days,
Hopefully it's alright, was tempted to get one for a while and thought I may as well,
Never tried vr before so won't be able to compare to other devices which may be a good thing ____________________ Cbt Done, Currently wobbling around on a Cbf125 and love it

Arrived 10am this morning, got out of bed, signed for it, went back to bed and woke up at 1.30pm fml.
Now debating how to fix the sensor boxes to the walls.
Already bought that Virtual Desktop the other week when I was dicking about with the Gear VR and Riftcat, so interested to see how that compares. |

Wow... what a mental experience so far. Loving the lab, my favourite is the archery / castle thing.
Had a quick look in to alt space, which is an interesting concept... can see that being big in the future.
Might buy that hotdogs and horseshoes after some food, seen several videos of that and looks cool as fuck.
I'm blown away by the immersion of the vive and the controllers are amazing. Just saw them new prototype controllers where they track your fingers too... the future just arrive for me |

Steam has sales.
"Free" versions are out there too.
Steam also has a refund policy within a time limit, if you haven't played for more than X amount of time you can get a refund. We've refunded a few that way. |

Just do it mate. They won't come down in price for some time because of the R&D and cost to make. HTC aren't like Sony where they will sell Playstations at a loss for 3 years just to break even, as they know they will make a fortune in the lifespan of the machine over 8 years or so.
You will not regret it. I was a little apprehensive that I would get bored quickly and it's just not the case, new stuff is coming out all the time for them.
You're talking about https://www.vorpx.com - £30 and you can run any games on their list in VR mode, which is something different to all the VR made games on Steam, etc. All those games were made specifically for VR, the graphics in most are nowhere near AAA titles but it really isn't about that. If you get the right mixture of immersion and fun, the graphics are not a problem. Like that archery game, it's low poly graphics, like a few notches up from Minecraft but it's completely immersive and really fun. |

I would love a C&C style game, played Red Alert recently
You should try Final Approach. In the middle of a table top airport. I've only played the once so far but spent way longer than I thought I would |

Here's my mini review of owning a Vive for about 6 weeks or something...
You run out of good content quickly. This is a big pisser, there's only a handful of really well made experiences/games that can continually hold your attention. Once you pay your way through these, you realise there's not much left to do.
By far, I have spent more time in Bigscreen Beta than anything else because of how fucking cool it is. I see this as being the future of VR mostly in the next few years, the social aspect of it and being able to watch stuff or hang out with people.
There's still new things coming out all the time for VR, just discovered this cool little game called QuiVr, which is a castle defense game which is much like the lab's version of archery but far more polished and completely different in mechanics.
Maybe because I'm not a massive gamer these days anyway it's boring me more than it should but at the moment it feels like an £800 archery simulator |

So is it the future? I'm still not sure, Gran Turismo 7 isn't going to be vR, a number of developers on the PC are supporting vR but it really needs mainstream titles if it's going to be widely adopted (my understanding's it hasn't been selling as well as they'd hoped).
Still sitting on the fence to see if it's another 3DTV and/or what the next gen' of devices are like. |
