Hello chaps and chappettes. I disappeared for a bit, bike's been off the road.
Went in for an MOT a few days back.

Failed on rear brake; 'excessive fluctuation of brake effort'. Chap at garage (not the inspector) pointed me in the direction of a new rear wheel.

The rear brake operates and has a reasonable amount of power, but it judders up and down, almost as if the drum isn't circular. I barely use the rear brake except at a standstill so it hasn't been an issue.

Pretty old thread back here with some info that sounds similar:
https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=191238

I don't have a lot of time to work on the bike at the moment, it's off the road, but equally it needs to be sorted at some point.

questions for the masters of bcf:

How difficult is it to replace the rear wheel and what tools do I need? How much am I looking at for a garage to do it? Any tips if I buy a wheel off eBay/similar - would be a pain in the arse to get one with the same issue and waste 40 quid + tools to fix it + time

If you can do without the bike for a short period there are companies that can skim the drum when the wheel is complete with tyre / bearings (had it done on X5). Better bet than chancing a sevond hand wheel.

Can you notice the fluctuation?

Did they put it on a rolling brake tester?

I ask because my local friendly shop's method of testing the brakes tends to be somewhat more... informal. I might consider trying my luck with an alternative tester.

At least get the wheel apart first and see if the (little used) mechanism is sticking or out of skew, before writing off the drum itself.

It's pretty massive and has existed since I bought the bike. It's a bit of a ratter.

Without a rolling tester it might pass, but it's there and obvious when rolling the bike around. At high speed it's less apparent.

Considered. Will they pull up the previous history and pay close attention though?

Haven't used it and don't plan to use it for the foreseeable. It's sitting off the road in a spot I won't have access to forever.

The options are basically: fix it and keep it around for the odd shop run, or leave it and sell it without. I suspect even if it's 100-200 quid to get sorted the former will work out better, 125s without an MoT must be a dime a dozen. Pain in the arse that I can't leave it in the road for the sake of an issue that only manifests when moving Laughing

Hadn't realised that riding without road tax/MoT is permitted if travelling to prearranged repairs, looks like I might call around a few places.

Cheers. I'm more concerned with finding the time to do it than the wheel cost given that it's bloody dark by 4pm at the moment.

If you know of anywhere North / East London beer tokens are up for grabs.

Update on this in case anyone has similar issues

Local garage ordered a second hand wheel from the 'bay, installed with new bearings, swapping over the tyre etc for approx 80 quid (plus the second hand wheel so about 140 all in).

Not cheap but from what I could determine having the wheel skimmed wouldn't have worked out much cheaper with labour.

DIY would have required transferring the tyre, bearings, etc combined with a 30 mile drive to where the bike was stored.
