My battery is a 12V. With a capacity rating of 8Ah, and a maximum charging rate of 1 Amp.

Would a 12Volt 4Amp charger, charging rate 2.8Adc equal to 4 Amps RMS
and a capacity of 12 Ah - 48Ah work... or be too powerful/weak?

I am thick as **** with electrics

Thanks

You have answered your question,
bike battery charger is usually half of 1 amp = 500ma.

I wouldn't buy it for a bike but if you already have it should be OK for brief/occasional use, and it would be more handy for charging a car or whatever too.
Though rated at 4 amps on a healthy battery the current supplied will drop away rapidly. Nothing bad will happen despite th battery suggesting less than 1 amp.
Bear in mind that the bike's alternator probably supplies at least 20 amps and that doesn't cause any problems.

Recommend an rc lipo charger. Most do Pb and they are better at it. Ebay/hobbyking Imax B6 or similar should be 15 quid delivered.

Transformer based chargers often have no regulation. If battery too small to load it, the charging voltage will be too high.

Another vote for the B6 range.

If you are only going to charge a standard bike battery, (Lead or Pb), then I'd suggest an iMax B6AC clone. The non-AC's need a decent external PSU, with the AC version, there is no fucking about with PSU's etc, just whack a Kettle/IEC lead in it,

If you do, then select Pb, select number of cells (6), set your charge rate (500mA) and hold go till it beeps. Very capable chargers, I have a genuine iMax B6 (£50ish) and a iMax B6AC clone (£15ish).

If you were to bump start your bike with a discharged battery, the bike it's self would charge it with more than that.

Not recommended, but not the end of the world. May shorten it's life slightly.

Another vote for a B6AC.

I'd use it in a pinch but not as a regular charger.
