Is it wrong to remark on how sharp-dressed the assassin was?

It's an assassination styled by Top Man.

As I said. More Fez required. He doesn't look anywhere near foreign enough. How are you supposed to know he's a murdering Turk if he doesn't wear a fez?

Interesting comments on line about how likely it is to be a set-up.

They have a point, and Putin would personally know what the score is. Who the hell lets ANYONE behind a speaker in an event? Fiddling with pockets etc.

All very fishy.

Perhaps we have had our Franz Ferdinand.

It's surprisingly uninteresting. Both Turkey and Russia think it's a Western conspiracy to drive them apart, which will drive them together. But Turkey has been changing course away from the West for some time now, only exacerbated by the coup attempt (more conspiracies).

They have joint cause in Syria, both against Isis and pro-Assad, for different reasons.

So really, in a geopolitical sense, this doesn't really amount to a hill of beans - it's small potatoes.

Berlin was a different matter. That's an attack on the EU, promoting nationalism. That one could have geopolitical consequences, if it affects Merkel's re-election.

The best thing the far right could do for their electoral prospects is stage a few false-flag terrorist attacks, or, if they're working in intelligence or security services, let some detected threats through to completion. If Russia wants greater influence in Europe, similarly, encouraging terrorist attacks attributed to asylum seekers would be greatly in its interest. And Russia definitely wants greater influence.

Counterpoint is that it's greatly in the West's interest to inflate the Russian threat. Cold war concentrated people's minds, encouraged international pacts and supranational thinking. But that's probably not going to happen with Trump. So the future looks tough for supranational bodies like the EU, unless the Russian threat is materialized somehow.

Black ops - made to look like someone is trying to kick off a major war WW1-style. But everyone knows that Russia wouldn't overextend itself like that. In theory, the only realistic outcome from this is that Russia would do the same to Turkish diplomats and then deny it. All that we can glean from this incident involving two expendable, deniable state bodies is that Turkish intel is making far less headway into Russia than Russia is, into Turkey and Syria. Lack of results... Thus making Turkish police and intel even more expendable than they already were, thus, naturally, sacrifical pieces. It's the equivalent of taking a queen with a knight, after the opening part of the game. It would make sense on paper for Erdogan to do it, but Russia already has several pawns on the opposite side of the board (i.e. it's winning in Syria and still has diplomatic relations with key players). So,nothing will come of it.

The constant pushing of "the Russians are coming!!!" narrative across pretty much all media in the last few months is annoying as fuck. Is the general man on the street actually dumb enough to believe it?

70% of UKians (who could be bothered to vote) voted for retaining the first past the post electoral system.

That's my litmus test for the cognitive faculties of the man/woman/other/pandakin on the Clapham omnibus.

(Actually, at the moment, they're likely to have an 85 IQ and be the pigeon-toed get of a cousin marriage).

I can vouch for at least one at work. Everything is the fault of the Russians or "that Putin", and repeats a BBC, Sky, Yahoo talking point verbatim.

Most others are too busy either talking about football or every other word is liberally sprinkled with kurwa so I'm unable to ascertain their viewpoint on the matter.
