I used to ride 40 miles a day on a Superdream, it was okayish.

My journey did not suck as much though. A259 East Worthing to Yapton

FX/FY carb models are worth quite a bit less IMO. Similar frame but quite a lot of differences. A good number of parts are not interchangeable, but annoyingly they are far more common, for a good reason - no immobiliser. they get stolen and end up as ebay parts, most after being crashed, found and recovered.

My tatty, 80,000 mile cbr6 is not going to be worth much Sad

I use a 125cc for my short commute, a Van Van. I also rode it Whitby last weekend, a 150 mile round trip in total comfort and I intend to ride it to Malaga in the summer..........

But, I wouldn't want to do a daily 60 mile commute on it, that's very different to a day out, that's a totally boring grind on a 125 and I'd advise against it. If I had to do it, I'd sell the Van Van.

MMmmm... food for thought. Some years ago I used to commute to and from LHR from Oxford on my NTV600 Revere. Great bike for that, and for the courier work I did daily. I deffo would not have liked to do that on a 125, what with the frantic bits of M-way etc.
However, I don't see any problem with a commute of the sort indicated by the OP; nice mix of roads and even on a 125 you can have some fun with the chavs in their Corsas and Astras etc. My own little 250 custom thing is hardly more than an overgrown CM125C, just slightly bigger bore and stroke, and flat out down hill just about 80 but will cruise on the level at an indicated 70 all day but it is very slim and nimble in traffic and for the mainly local riding I do it is great, especially in the traffic light Grands Prix. I even manage to go on the occasional ride-out, though sometimes I have to wring its neck a bit to keep up with the big boys.
So go for it!

Odd that. I used to love commuting on my 125. I guess it's just down to the roads which you use and the level of traffic. I would take it up to alnwick round the back of rothbury and cragside, very scenic and good fun.

Another update if anyone's interested!

I'm buying a 2006 Suzuki Bandit 650s. I pick it up on Saturday.

I spoke to my mechanic and he told me the salvage value is worth about £350 no more than £500. My insurance company are saying that they have a contract in place with a salvage company and they will pay £600 for the bike regardless if it just has a few scratches or had been burnt to a crisp!

Fortunately I do not need my insurance money to buy my new bike so I'm going to keep fighting!

I done daily 80 miles round trip (urban, NSL A roads & motorways) on my old (11 plate) YBR 125 for a year until passed test then done it on my BMW F650, chain drive. Both bikes were/are ok, obviously 650 cc better than 125. I relocated work so now do 50 mile daily round trip commute.
I asked the bloke who services & MOT's my bike, my DAS instructor and the examiner what is best minimum cc bike for 80 Mike commute, they all said best is minimum 600cc.
Need heated trips. Comfy seat & windscreen ideal.
250cc good mpg but bigger bike more stable in wind, on bends etc.

Bandits are heavy, but they make comfortable mile munchers. Check rear preload, they handle particularly bad if it's way out, but it's often wound down to lower the rear, which screws with the rising rate linkage.
