Hi all, i only passed my CBT in august 2016 i currently ride a Yamaha 125 wrx. i use my bike to commute to work daily Monday to Friday, its a distance of 35 miles there and 35 coming back a total of 70 miles per day, 175 miles per week.

the fuel tank on the Yamaha is just 8.5 liters. which is small i know. i only get 3 journeys out of a full tank, this is only giving me just over 100 miles, i have to fill up pretty much every day !!! i use A roads and pretty much stay at 55 mph.

Is this normal for this bike?

thanks Middle Finger [/b]

56ish MPG.

That's if you are using all of the 8.5L in the tank for your 105 miles.

There are few vehicles that will do that sort of MPG in the real world in real world conditions.

INB4 'my car....blar blar' I drive a brand new 2.0 TDI car that claims 70+MPG - it does 50 or so tops.

56mpg seems low for a 125 my 650 gets around that and my old ybr just never seemed to run dry.

Typical Yamaha 125 should do about 110mpg, you're getting about half that.

Both my 07 YBR F.I. and 07 CG avereged 90-100mpg on my old commute and new of about 20 and 15 miles each way. I would expect 80+ on yours.

Others are getting over 150 miles to a tank:
https://www.fuelly.com/motorcycle/yamaha/wr_125_x

I get 115-120mpg, 300 miles/tank.

Fill tank up to brim... reset odometer...ride bike until you feel need to refuel.... refuel and check amount of fuel you put in and the miles ridden = real world MPG.

I would like to imagine you are getting >56mpg but probably not by a huge amount.

Not in my case. I accurately measured the fuel consumption for a couple of weeks, right down to using the same pump in the same garage etc.

How much do you weigh?

What you're getting is very, very poor mpg.

With me just shy of 100kg, my cbf125 got 97mpg.

First off; do what Dodsi suggested.

Tall bikes are often considerably less good on fuel, especially at speed where you're using a good bit of the power to move air away than to drive you forward.

Christ on a bike, the wife's Zontes does about 116mpg by our reckoning, that is a 125 at 50-55mph....

It doesn't sound like a great MPG but your riding style is the most important part of achieving anywhere near a manufacturers stated figures.
That's even more difficult to achieve on a 125 as there are certain roads where you need to whack on the throttle to make sure you don't potatoe yourself.
Whilst some riders just love rev'ing the nuts off a bike and don't seem to understand the low mpg that results from that.

So firstly you need to make sure what mpg you have now, then have a few days riding like granny and check your mpg at the same time.
If the granny riding doesn't improve the mpg dramatically then, yes mention it the next time the garage look at the bike.

Whatever the outcome, smooth throttle use will make a difference to the mpg, but not necessarily that big a difference.

(I don't want to see a video of you granny riding thanks Laughing )

What happens then?

The bike runs out of fuel?

A low fuel light comes on?

The fuel gauge reads empty?

So far so good.

70 mile round trip five times a week is 350 miles, isn't it Confused
Or am I being thick? (A possibility I cannot entirely rule out).

I can't see how 55mpg can be anything other than a maths error.

I used to get around 95 - 100mpg out of my AJS (Yamaha YBR engine), and that was thrashing it everywhere.

55 sounds a bit low to me. Leaking? Smell rich? Bad math Wink ?

Of course if OP's actually doing 350 miles/week then he's really getting about 110mpg...

My DT125RE, so two stroke and not overly efficient

fill about £8 of 99ron

refill at anywhere between 100-125 miles

So even I must be doing in the order of 70mpg.

Blimey Shocked

Firstly OP needs to do an accurate consumption check.

Secondly if it was 56mpg (which it won't be) irrespective of it being a tall trailie it's fucked!

A 24bhp KMX 125 will do 40-44mpg, and you'd struggle to get much less than 38mpg out of one IMO.

I'd want more than 10-12mpg more to put up with riding dull flat droning four stroke with 10bhp less.

80mpg+ is probably right, I've never had a CG125 that couldn't do 86mpg or more thrashed from tank to tank.
