Anyone have experience with this? A good friend thinks he needs these doing as the car is billowing blue smoke. I'd like to help him out if I can as I owe him, I think it's a scrapper if we can do it cheap.

Constant billowing blue smoke is usually knackered rings/bores. Valve seals on the way out usually blow smoke after a reasonable time not running (e.g. overnight), when lifting off the throttle for a gearchange or after coasting downhill for a while. Never come across stem oil seals that far gone that oil is constantly getting into the cylinders but could be wrong.

Not sure if that model has one (it probably does) but a cheaper thing to check out first is the CCV valve, make sure the membrane is not damaged allowing oil to seep into your intake, if I remember rightly on my e39 you can check it by taking off the oil filler when the engine is running, the engine should stutter and struggle to run if the vent is damaged or not, cant remember which way it was! mine was a 6 cyl petrol though! also when revved it would have an induction noise almost like when you have one of those cheapo cone filters fitted! Good luck!

So it doesn't really clear?

Is it worse if it's left idling?

Sure it's not the turbo that's on its way out?

I haven't seen it yet, he said its really bad he isn't driving it because of the amount of smoke.

How can I confirm if it is the turbo?

Well, a common symptom is when left idling for a while, then when revved, it will produce blue smoke in the exhaust which should eventually clear. Same at start up.

Problem is, that's also a similar symptom to if it is valve seals. If you can access the turbo, check for play in the shaft. Does it make a whining/whizzing sound when the turbo spools up?

Both! Smile

It's probably a symptom of the oily smoke it's producing, and probably causing a separate issue

Can he/you check it for any fault codes?

Should do, unless the EML has been 'doctored' to pass the MOT?

E39 is a 5-series, so I'm guessing he has a 530d. But anyways that doesn't make much of a difference with this advice:

After changing the valve seals (sorry I don't know much about this), get the EGR removed, remap and replace turbo seals if the turbo is causing any leaks. Problem diminished and power increased

Blue smoke will be oil being burnt, got a video of smoke? If its a shit load of blue coming out then its normally the turbo.
You can look for codes but i doubt you will find much.
And EML has fuck all to with the mot Fizzoid.
Egr sticking normally produces thick black smoke and lack of power. Thumbs Up

Should have been more clear...

It'll be flagged as an advisory, or at least should be. May have been doctored to not be flagged as having an issue.

Mate bought an Audi A3 and it'd had the EML light coloured in with a Sharpie or something similar

Theres a lot of oil on the inlets side there, tell him to stop stripping the head and look at the turbo/ intercooler, the latter will probably have lots of oil in it from the turbo oil seals that are gone

Has he already replaced the crankcase breather filter (ccv) with the vortex version? If not then check that.

Any play in the turbo spindle?
