A modern O-ring chain actually doesn't need any lubrication, that's why it has O rings with lube inside the joints. All they need is a clean with paraffin and a toothbrush and it'll come up perfect.

Dangerous advice interspersed with nuggets of truth. Best case scenario for not lubing chain: you need new sprockets and chain after a few hundred miles. Worst case: the chain fails, and takes chunks out of crank case and locks rear wheel, dumping you into traffic. Yes paraffin cleans chains. I challenge you to find me an owners manual for a chain driven bike that does not advise regular lubrication.

Surprisingly your owners manual probably says clean with paraffin and lube with engine oil. But oh, the stuff flings. Yes it does, and instead of becoming encrusted with a weeks worth of road grit, now embedded in anti-fling wax to make a nice grinding paste, said debris is flung off. Many high-milers get scottoiler type things which constantly drop oil on the chain and is intended to fling. Proper adjustment of drip rate prevents the tyre from getting covered in fling.
