Re: recent spinal injury...

My left leg is pretty much cripple, I don't want to stop riding however, gear changer is fine £600 for a shifter on the bars but the only thing Im concerned about is stopping and using my left leg on the floor.. as I'm unable to actually take any weight on it as it just does nothing I'll fall to the side..

Is there a way around this.. I know just stop on the right hand side but not always an option...

Any ideas?

contact the NABD, they'll be able to help you find someone who can fit/fabricate one on your bike

It's always an option if you do what every other disabled person does and plans ahead.

You can have a side stand fitted on the right, you've already sussed out gear change options, now you just have to retrain your brain to never put you in a position where you have to hold up the bike with your left leg.

... so yeah right foot down, I assume this isn't an option because you want rear brake control?

I think that your choice probably comes down to two options. I work as a physio and depending on what sort of knee bend you need for your machine an orthopaedic knee brace might do you a job. It is basically an ego-skeleton type thing that we use for patients who have gone through ACL reconstruction mostly, but can be used for other applications. You can specify the range of motion that you want in the knee - i.e. 0 - 30 degrees and the brace won't let your knee bend beyond that. If put on tightly it should do a job, but the potential issue comes with whether you ride a sports bike for instance the requires a great deal more knee flexion, and also how much power you have with your leg. If you have 0/5 (nothing at all) this won't work. If you have some power it might. The one I'm thinking of is a bit bigger than the link below but I can't find it at the moment.

https://www.ossur.com/injury-solutions/products/knee/hinged-knees/form-fit-knee-rom-brace

Second option is to use something like this:

https://landingear.com

There are a fair few companies that manufacture this stuff and it works I think largely from a switch on your dashboard. It might be that you can specify that you only need the one side.

Use your NHS compo money to buy a midget in a top box who will jump off and prop the bike up whenever you stop.

As others have said - NABD. Helped a few of my mates out, some managed to stay on bikes, some were too badly injured or missing a few pieces and had to ride a trike.

I assume he wants rear brake control. Personally I'd do what you suggest with a bar-mounted rear brake for hill starts. Fitting an auto-shifter thingy might be an idea as well.

Extend your side stand by a few inches so it keeps the bike much more upright and just flick it down with your leg and prop bike on that whilst stationary?

Can put normal side stand on RHS if needed for when parked etc.

A friend of mine lost his left leg something like twenty years ago.

He was until recently running a ZZR600 with slightly damaged left hand fairings, apparently some road cambers aren't funny when you stop on them.

He machined up a replacement gear lever that goes all the way under the bike and sits in front of the brake lever.
