been on my 125 almost 2 years, passed DAS in November so full A licence. looking for new bikes. Insurance is up for renewal 07 Feb and then I will have 2 years NCB. I assume if I got a bike now and tried to insure I would lose this year's NCB? so is best thing to do wait it out until 07 Feb and then insure bike from 08 Feb assuming I have got a new one by then

Yeah, let it run to Feb. It's only a couple of weeks and you don't have the new bike yet. It's actually more likely that you'll get to the renewal date before you have a new bike in your possession.. then you'll be wondering whether to reinsure the 125cc or not.

At that point I'd be buying insurance based on being able to swap to a larger bike, rather than initial premium purchase cost.

Agreed, tough it out.

If you possibly can, try and arrange a bike change on that day and get rid of your 125 then rather than insuring it for longer. You can only use your NCB on one policy, and it should be your Big Boy Bike.

It's OK to let the insurance on your 125 lapse while you try and flog it on, but you should keep it off-road and are supposed to SORN it the moment it's uninsured, although in practice you should have about a month before DVLA start with the blackmail letters.

Be careful about giving test rides on it even if the potential buyers swears that their insurance covers it as: 1) it may not (you'd have to read their certificate and policy) and 2) it'll ping up on ANPR and you'll be the one getting the NIP and S172.

Ideally agree purchase so you collect new bike on that day, if PX, agree to take old bike in day before. If buying private it's more difficult.

I have done things like leaving my bike in the garage on the old insurance and collecting it the next day, on the next years policy, with the restrictors removed and a shiny new motad exhaust.

Quick note on riding other peoples bikes,
all the policies I've had (Bennetts, MCE, bike sure and a few others no doubt) explicitly state that I could ride other peoples bikes as long as it was insured by the owner at the time (who knows why), which if you've let the insurance lapse then these people won't be covered...

Also asking price, in cash, in hand before they take it out...
