Would this be a good bike for me to get when I pass my DAS?

I'm looking for something that is good for commute and good for touring.

I heard the mpg is terrible on these things though, would it be smarter go get a slightly smaller adventure tourer like an F650 or Versys 650?

I do think the 955i looks so damn cool, and it is pretty cheap 2nd hand.

My 1050 sprint is managing 45 to the gallon.

It's a big old bus of a bike. For a new rider it might be too much.

The most comfortable bike I have owned. Got mine cheap, sold on with a really big profit and regretted doing it.

Ugly but great bike, especially for touring if you have the hard luggage. I'm don't remember mine being particularly thirsty.

Aren't you in London? If so the 955i is only 2001-2006 iirc, which means you're gonna get screwed by ULEZ come 2020 if plan on keeping it that long.

Personal choice, obviously. I didn't particularly like mine in black but rather fancied the lime green or orange. Embarassed

Mine had a Remus system which sounded wonderful but the exhaust reduced the right hand pannier capacity by a good amount. Good wind protection but need hand shields.

Great for road touring and minor off road but nothing serious with my skill levels. Those tyres weren't the best in wet weather either!

I agree with everything Polarbear said. Plus they handle really well too, if you really get on it you can ride them like a supermoto, leg out shoving it down into corners. I regret selling mine too.

I never remember mine being bad on fuel. They will pull cleanly in top gear from 20mph. They are a bit top heavy when at a standstill, especially if you have short legs, but get them moving and they are perfect.

I have those Metlzer Tourance jobbies on the Pig. They're, how shall we say, a bit shit in anything above and including 'damp'.

Yeah the bad mpg is the only thing making me feel slightly apprehensive about it. Is average of 50mpg on it asking for too much?

My idea of fuel consumption when touring is more what range I can get out of a tank rather than actual MPG. I know I could get somewhere close to 200 miles out of mine per tank and looking at the spec sheet it holds 5 gallon so thats 40 mpg. I never tried to be economical though so that's a pretty abstract figure and purely from memory. I never commuted on mine either.

I reckon it should be do able as long as you are mindful of the throttle. That should give you a range of over 200 miles. My '98 Blade used to do around 45mpg at a steady 80 - 85 mph just by not going mad when accelerating up to speed.
