Don't mind whatever Tawny is calling himself this week, it's... well, OK, it's not well intentioned, but to be fair... uh... just, best if you don't mind. He's mostly harmless.

The reason we're asking is to try and figure out if you already have a full license.

I believe in Spain you get A1 (125cc) free with B (car) entitlement, but it's never been that way in the UK.

If you passed a test in 1996, a proper DSA test with an examiner following you around, on a 120 - 125cc bike capable of 100kph (~62mph), then you should have got an "A <= 25kW" license that automagically upgraded to a full unrestricted A after 2 years.

If you passed on a bike that was not capable (or not listed as capable) of doing 100kph, then you could and would have got an A1 light license. That category was around before the recent license changes, it's just that very few people got one, which is why Tawny doesn't know about it.

I guess this is probably moot since presumably your instructor and DVLA have already checked your entitlement and have seen that you don't have full A. Sad

So, hauling this train-wreck back on course: best of luck with your test tomorrow. It's just a ride around. Plenty of observations, slow into junctions and roundabouts, confident out, and don't sweat the "independent riding" section without directions - it really doesn't matter where you go, as long as you go there safely.

Many thanks Rogerborg for your observations and wishes.
In Spain I transfered to a Spanish driving licence.
When I came back here I had to re-apply for and got a UK one.
I was determined to live out our lives in Spain, but not all plans work out.
I miss most of all............having breakfast outside.

I learned something today. Don't we learn everyday?

Where the test is taken there is a lot of changing from 20 to 30 mph and back again. I went 20 when I should have been doing 30 and got a failure. Everything else was spot-on.

My initial reaction was par for the course and I called myself all the names under the sun.

I remembered the weather forecast for the next week or so, up until the re-test, and thought, "I don't really want to be out in that, do I?" It had started to snow half way round the 40 minutes test!

So on the way home I called into our local greengrocers, picked up some celery, broccoli and leeks, raided the veggie drawer for onions and garlic and made a thick vegetable broth. It is delicious and I made enough of it to last until the re-test.

Europe can wait.

Repeatedly?

So much for it being a limit rather than a target, eh.

Ah well, you know what DVSA Derek expects now, and it should be no bother next time.

Also: broth needs barley. Wink

bad luck fella tip I got told is if you are not sure of the speed look down a side road as the road will normally be posted with same limit to start with

That's a good tip about the signs on the side roads.

Also the barley one, although I did put some lentils in the broth.

Hmmm. They're more likely to have a sign if the limit changes, as you usually don't get 30 repeaters in built up areas (i.e. the ones with streetlights). The tip I was given was pretty much the reverse of what you were told:

If you're in a built up area, and the side roads say 30, it's a good chance you're on a 20 zone road! And, of course, vice versa.
