On Thursday this week I'm due to pick up a little dog from her owner. The owner is going to have major surgery and doesn't think she'll be able manage to look after the dog when it's done.

Found out yesterday that the dog, 2 years old, hasn't had any vaccinations at all.

What vaccinations should I get done right away? Should I keep her indoors until she's had them (she's an ex-show dog, not sure she's been outside much at all) ?

She's also been chipped, so what's the process of getting those details changed? Surely I can't just go to the vet that she's registered with and say "This is now my dog, please update your records."

Phone your local vet and they'll sort the necessary vaccines.

Yes you should keep her in doors until they've been done. The vet will tell you more details about this. Not too sure why the dog being a show dog is a reason for not having vaccinations done but there we go.

With updating the details registered for the microchip, guess what, the vet can also help you with that.

So yeah, phone the vet and get everything sorted out.

Mine came with all jabs done, and was chipped. Needed kennel cough nasal spray that was about it. But yeah, I pretty
much did say it's my dog now at my first vet visit with her and they updated the chip records there and then.

She does have a lot of rosettes on a board with her name on so I suspect she has been shown as the owner claims.

No idea about the kennel club, I wont be showing her, she's coming to me to be a pet not a show dog. Did a quick google about kennel club rules, didn't seem to mention much of vaccinations.

Kennel Club is to do with pedigrees and breeding, they've not got anything to do with vaccinations.

You aren't thinking logically. Anyone who isn't legit isn't going to bother to get the dog registered to them. It's responsible owners who do things like chip and vaccinations. Thumbs Up

Think about your pet insurance too and study small print before you decide. We had a Policy for our (now ex) pooch that had a £250 excess plus 20% of claim amount, plus a minimum claim of £5,000 in any calendar month. He needed treatment for a knackered knee, then a prolonged stomach problem that was after thousands of pounds of vet bills eventually diagnosed as cancer. We had to pay the vet up front for everything as the particular insurer has a reputation for not honouring claims. Small potatoes in comparison with the loss of said pooch, but over the course of a year we had to find about £6,000, of which we have only been reimbursed about £3,000 so far...

Good point from Diggs.

I asked more than one vet and they have all said Petplan. They certainly aren't the cheapest butI know my vet will go straight to them for anything big and I don't have to fork out upfront (except the excess obviously).

As above regarding vaccines. Make an appointment at your local vet, they'll take it from there.

I'd have expected a dog show to insist all the dogs there are fully vaccinated. There again, the dog showing/breeding fraternity are odd enough to buy into the whole antivaxx thing. They are the same people who will breed from a dog with a known heritable heart defect because it's the colour they want.

Your vet will be able to read the chip number for you but they can't change the details it's registered to. The chips details are kept on one of several third party databases.

If you call one of them (we use petlog) and it isn't on theirs, they'll usually be able to tell you which one it's on.

So call up, explain you're the new owner. They'll either take your details or send you a form. They then write to the current owner to check if they've sold the dog. If they hear nothing, they change the details to you (a bit like applying for a car logbook).

They may charge you.

Indeed, she's a Whippet.

She settled in nicely, well behaved all night. She was a little frightened about going upstairs at first. She'd go up fine then get to the landing and run back down again. When I got her to go up again I stopped her going downstairs and took her into each room to show her there was nothing to worry about. Then a little treat. Now she's happy to go upstairs.

Woke up this morning to find her snuggled up against me. I think we'll be fine Smile
