suspected air leak..

spray copious amounts of deodorant around the carb boots on the vtr it eventually bogs down and dies..

runs utter shit under 3500rpm but picks up and goes fine after..

definitely air leak?

chance it could be the vaccum hose from head to fuel petcock?

carbs have been off twice and even changed the boots, cant see anything obvious

EEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRR, has it fuel supply to the carbs when sucking the vacuum pipe?
Could you see through the pilot jets before assembly?
Did you fit an inline fuel filter ?
VTR what?

Vtr 1000
It has fuel that goes through fine when sucking the vacuum hose if it didn't it wouldn't run at all let alone over 3500rpm

No in line filter it has one on the tap

Get the electrical tape out and wrap the rubbers. This fault finding may turn out to be a semi-permanant solution.

Use black tape and you could even offload it on some unsuspecting Gumtree dog-swapper.

Pilots are clearly and originals are 45 I have 48 fitted which is a common change on the vtr.

Just had boots off cleaned all boots, engine inlet and carbs up.. changed all vac hoses and boots are now mega tight I can't do them up any tighter....

Almost back together.. let's see

Have you tried a denser airfilter like rubber foam or blocking 90% off the air intake (as a choke)?

Will grab a pair of tights and see.

Put it back together after going ham on it and it feels a bit better but it's still doing it...

Shouldn't be the filter as it was fine then suddenly nothe.

It's done this before a few times but soon cleared itself out within a few miles

Try an in line fuel filter to see what`s going in,
did you replace the float needle valves?

Does the VTR1000 run with coils in the plug caps?
Or separate coils and plug caps?
It sounds very similar to the symptoms that I had on the Exup1000 where the original plug caps were discharging the coil energy to the cylinder head instead of to the spark plug.

Inside of a typical plug cap is a resistive element. These can go open circuit and when this occurs the coil energy builds up to such an extent that it bypasses the resistor and passes on to the spark plug.My Exup would be okay above about 3500 rpm but below that it would only run on three cylinders.

If you have a multimeter, the plug caps should measure between 5,000 to 10,000 ohms.On some plug caps the resistor can be removed,as I did, and replaced with a similar length of brazing rod Thumbs Up

Have you tested these coils? I had one go, it stuttered under 3000rpm.
The resistance is ~11K IIRC for primary, I'll dig out spec tomorrow - otherwise measure them all to find the runt.

Guessing you already tried/inspected plugs.

As your first post, suspected air leak, does yours have p.a.i.r. valves using vacuum from a carb manifold?
Also a shot in the dark have you low voltage at low revs or a poor battery connection to the bike frame?
