Broke down on the A3 a month ago with a loss of power, smoke like Thomas the tank engine (although both white and blue) and it stalled with clutch in before making it to hard shoulder.

Did not hear a bang and it just felt like it was running on 1 cyl and that was main reason it stalled.

Tried to start the bike. And she did start, but wouldn't stay started unless on full choke.

Garage was like a Cheech & Chong movie.

Does it look like warn rings, letting combustion mix into the crankcase?

Would that be a blown head gasket being water cooled ?

I've not because the kit I have is based on a long piece of pipe and an adaptor you screw on the end to get it down to 10mm.

I used it on my XR and in the process of unscrewing it, the adaptor stayed in the spark plug hole and the long piece came out.

I was very lucky in that some long nose plyers were just enough (due to open space at front of plug) to get down in and edge out the adaptor.

The SV has a much longer and fully enclosed head/cam area. If the adaptor doesn't come out with the pipe, no way needle plyers saving the day Smile

I guess though, what have I got to lose now though. Will apply lube to the adaptor to plug hole thread and not screw it in too much and make sure the pipe is welded to the adaptor. Will add some threadlock.

OK, comp test it is. Smile

Possibly. The expansion tank was at the same level as 9 months ago and the rad is full of pink coolant though.

SV Cylinder Compression according to Haynes
213PSI new
156PSI service limit

I have..... 90..

https://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/w559/pigeon35/170130%20-%20Resurrection/20170218_162923.resized_zps7sib5k0l.jpg

That was the rear cylinder. I was unable to get a reading from the front due to rad being in the way.

Pulled the new spark plugs out

Front cyl:
https://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/w559/pigeon35/170130%20-%20Resurrection/20170218_163915.resized_zpsogt7u3in.jpg

Rear cyl:

Both spark nicely and both exhausts were fecking hot. Rear is proper sooty.

Another smoking session

For old time sake, didn't do it 100% because was choking to death and its pointless

So, you have metal particles in the oil and at least one cylinder is seriously down on compression.

Time to strip it - get the heads off and investigate, it's the only way to see for definite.

Or, no reserve auction on ebay - running, just needs a new powerband etc.

An unscrupulous owner might throw some sort of magic gunk in like Holts or Rislone Piston Seal then advertise it as RACEBIKE, on the slight chance that it might temporarily ameliorate the issue without this turning into a BodyGuard thread.

Have you got any gear or can borrow some to do a leak down test with?

I'd not want to be stripping engines, until I know where I think the problem lies. A leak down test done properly will tell you alot about the engine and where to look first I.e top end strip or bottom end strip.

Are both cylinders reading the same on your compression tester? Also I'd not yet suspect low compression as you said your tester isn't perfect and might not be sealed 100%. Using a cheap tester or using one incorrectly has led many an owner to think their bike has hardly any compression.

I'd be checking the cam chain tension and the tensioner, too for any signs of something amiss like a loose chain or jumped sprockets etc. What do the valve clearances look like too?

If the bike was running well until it started smoking, I'd not be suddenly expecting piston/ring wear causing a smoke fest.

The oil looked very black however, but your vid didn't sound like it was making a bottom end knock or rattle.

Could be ring suddenly failing though.

Did you try both dry and wet compression tests? How was the wet test?

Bike is probably worth £300 from breaking and selling parts.

So instead, I'm going to keep it and have the heads off. I only replaced the front exhaust studs 2 years ago so am confident they will be easy, but I left the rears due to crappy access....

https://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/w559/pigeon35/170130%20-%20Resurrection/20170205_185942.resized_zpsebpgdzhh.jpg

Where there's a will, there's a way......and a dremel. Smile

Paddy, legend, thank you! I have transport so will hold station on your kind offer Thumbs Up

Steveo, don't have the tools for a leak-down test. Am going to treat this as a learning exercise and have the heads off.

Valve clearances are spot on, I re-shimmed 2 years ago and checked them the other week as it was in bits anyway. They had tightened a tiny bit but were in the middle of the range, well in spec.

I like tinkering and often look for jobs that don't really need doing, but do them anyway. So now I've got a reason Smile

Not removed a coolant system before. Not done a top end since my TS50x, never done 4t.

If we have a sunny spring/summer, I'll be riding bikes. If it rains, in the garage swearing at rusted and seized nuts, bolts and pipes Smile

Thanks all Karma

EDIT:

Place your bets as the real cause.

I'm going ring failure on rear piston......or maybe head gasket on the rear.

It costs nothing to take it apart and have a gander. Once you're in you can decide whether to chuck some money at it. Either way, a secondhand SV engine shouldn't break the bank and might be worth doing to keep the bike on the road.
