Currently studying this in one of my uni modules.

Traffic Waves.

Lengthier explanation here.

Turns out there's a mathematical formulation for those phantom pile-ups that sometimes happen on the motorway.

It's also why some stretches of road have a variable speed limit. There's a relationship between traffic density and the optimum speed for getting cars through.

So speed limits aren't just about saving kittens. Science Cool

Mythbusters covered this: my kids already think it's prehistoric millinage.

After 20 years or so in academia, isn't Percy doing a PhD by now and making his own discoveries? What's he doing "studying" anything?

Probs too busy investing in a brand new device called Rainpal to bother studying.

Nah, he wouldn't invest in anything without doing a SurveyMonkey first.

Into the 4th year of it now (so that's 3rd year of the physics malarkey - remember one year was added due to China scholarship). One more year after this and then I'm jumping ship. Masters is the meal ticket*. Absolutely zero interest in PhD stuff. It's too much of a niche to boast on a CV and would only prolong the inevitable boot back into the adult world.

* To combat the brain-drain of their own best-educated fleeing to the west, the Middle Kingdom has just opened up its job market to all postgraduate-certified foreigners who are within one year of having left uni.

The Einsteinian sections must be a breeze given that you're travelling at relativistic speeds.

I'd wager that 'old hat' is taught in every educational facility the world over.

I wish there was official interest in catching and re-training the dawdling fools on otherwise clear roads who also cause this kind of dangerous tailback. Similarly, the farmers in their tractors on my busy A-road commute at 8:30am. Why go out then!? Instead of being targeted, the slow driver is made to feel virtuous by the safety geeks
