So can we conclude that the peasant folk knew what they were voting for (and therefore didn't bother), unlike their betters in Richmond?

Hard to know what's in the mind of the common man.

All I know is that Nuttall should have waltzed it on a "Send Sharia May a message to get on with it" single issue platform, but didn't appear to realise that he's (very temporarily) in charge of a protest party.

I think the Tories are making just enough of an effort in Stoke to split the vote and ensure a Labour victory while they focus on Copeland. It benefits the Tories to help Labour win the one seat they cannot take from them. It would give Corbyn just enough of a win to hold on and allow him to keep the party in the toilet a while longer. I think the Tories are playing the long game. Time will tell how it pans out.

Quick ask me the Lottery numbers! In fairness though the Tories have played this perfectly. The Conservative political machine has to be comparable to New Labour around 1998 in terms of effectiveness. Should this continue I don't see Labour even sniffing for power until 2025 and even then it'll be far from a sure thing.

I wouldn't say the Tories are doing a good job, it's more Labour are doing an unbelievable self-harm act and will spend years and years in opposition. Anyone half competent and/or appealing to the electorate has jumped ship, it's merely a case of how low Corbyn will take the party before the rebuilding begins.

Was anyone surprised by the results?

Labour won in Stoke. That is what they do.

Conservatives won in Whitehaven. Sellafield is there, the area lives or dies based on nuclear decommissioning being a thing that the govt funds. Corbyn is anti nuclear. It'll go back to Labour once Corbyn is out.

Nice. Very classy.

Quite tame compared to some of the poison you drip. Anyway, he wasn't even there, probably.

Yeah and the referendum will never vote Leave, Trump has no chance and Julio will never get laid.

Some odd things are happening in politics.

And you'll convert to a Muslim.

You know the saying, not all Muslims are cunts, but all cunts are Muslim.

I am astonished that Labour didn't do well with snappy slogans like this
