Personally, I'd want to keep it legal and I could never be bothered with faffing around trying to get bikes to the test centre legit, so I went through a school and would do every time. I kinda figure that, yeah, it costs a fair amount, which we all begrudge having to pay (especially when it's the second time taking tests) but I'm happier in the knowledge that no one's going to fuck me up the bum when they find out I'm riding illegally.

i agree with this. cost me a bit more for my mod1 failures than normal, but the examiner knew the bike and you dont have to mess around with insurance etc.

Test fee's, you know, the bit that you pay the DVSA.

I know what test fees are. Very Happy

I think you missed my point. I was trying to save unnecessary future wear on your apostrophe key. Wink

If in doubt leave em out.

Because, technically speaking, he's turned up riding a bike that he doesn't have a licence to ride.

This, also wouldn't technically be insured.

When not on test, yes.

But why is that the DVSA's concern? While on test, his provisional entitlement is valid, and his insurance could be too. You're not asked to show any evidence that you're insured, beyond ticking a box.
