Its a great side job, with no requirements but a bike and a phone, you get 4 pounds for a delivery and on a busy day its easy to make around 12 pounds per hour.
Ride safe!

I'm undecided. I cannot choose between calling you a cunt or a wanker.

(Calling you a bastard is out, for obvious reasons.)

4 pounds for a delivery? And how much petrol allowance?

I can do 50 miles on 4 quids worth of fuel (on a motorway) so thats not much distance to make any money. Rolling Eyes

I was delivering pizza on a ped 20 odd years ago when I was 16. For 1.50 per hour and 15p per delivery.
On a good night I could make 30 quid. Laughing It was a shit job then and it's still a shit job now.

£4 a delvery; £12 per hour = one deliver every 20 minutes.
10 min out, ten min back, at maybe an average speed of 20mph, on city streets, means about 20 miles, maybe 7 miles a drop.
How much did that chap say the upfront insurance was £350 a year, on top of the normal cover, STILL reckon would beg "Inc Business use" adding to the policy.
Let that slide, still means you have to do, oooh... almost 100 calls, to cover the insurance! That's 700 miles of fuel you're down, lets give this to the tiddler and say I might get 90 to the gallon, in such duty, that's almost 8 gallons, or another £50's worth, and another dozen calls to pay for that, and probably a couple more to pay for the fuel to do them!
Now up to 120 calls, and 850 miles, and I'm looking at how close to needing an oil change the bike is.... Lets make the service a skinny one, just plugs, oil and checking the chain; That's about £15's worth, mostly for the spark plugs... I have now done about 125 calls.. and I might just have broken close to even.... and IF I managed to get them all on reasonably busy nights, and managed to 'average' two and a half calls an hour 'ish'... that's 50 hours.....
Hmmm.... busy nights will be Thusday thru Saturday, and from maybe 6pm to 1am, that's the only time you might make three calls an hour.
Three nights a week, possibly 7hrs a night, IF you can even out the calls over the whole shift, 21 calls, a week.. realistically, more likely 15.... for the BUSY nights.....
So for the first ten weeks, almost three months, creaming the primo shifts... I MIGHT with an old light-weight, I might JUST cover my costs.
OK, after that the insurance is paid for.. might start making some money.... lets see....
Fuel and servicing still costs, about 50p a call.. IF I could keep blagging the primo shifts and working all night, three night a week, and keep up 15 calls a shift, 45 calls a week, for the remaining 38 weeks of the year, that's possibly 1710 calls, and maybe, £6,800... gross... Before 'tax'
IF I dont need a new skid lid or water proofs, or haven't had any 'incident' for which liablty is denied, like my bike being tipped over in the street whils I drop off a pizza, or any other expense occuring situation.
OR before paying aything towards depreciation on the bike....
Lets add a bit of that.... would £1000 a year be reasonable.. probably cver the monthlies on a YBR on 3-year deal, or almost a lexmoto a year...
So take that off, say what? £100 for a 'cheap' helmet and or visors? maybe as much again in wear and tear on water-proofs?
Might as well chuck in the £17 a year road tax and £30 for an MOT.
NOW f I am lucky and can keep blagging the better shifts, AND work three nights a week, eight hours a shift... something a little more than a 16 hr per week, part time job, not quite, a 40 hour per week full time one, AND out of sociable hours...... on Fridays and week-ends when most of my mates (I know I don't have any, but this is lets pretend!) are out on the razz, ordering pizzas..... £5,500 for almost 1000 hours, just about £5.50 per hour JUST about NMW .. for a large chunk of 'upfront' investment in my own bike, and deprecation on that; gear, insurance, fuel and maintenance, all out of my own pocket, and before the tax man starts asking for his bit.

IF tried to up the income taking extra shifts, NOT creaming the prime evenings, for all the income went up, the hourly rate would go down, and I'd be doing more hours to make less money... BUT presume I could stretch to two extra nights a week... that would take me up to 40 hours, a dull time job, in ant-social working hours, and on the slow nights, maybe average 1.5 drops and hour instead of 2.5, and maybe f I'm lucky average 2 drops an hour over the week, that's 80 drops a week, £16,000 a year gross; 28ooo miles (Best part of all the useful life of 'good' tiddler 'used'!) 28 services, definitely one new riding outfit, at least £500 worth of insurance, at least £1000 if not £200's worth of bike use, 311 gallons or almost £200 worth of fuel.. plus 28 services, Crikey one a fortnght! Probably in my own time, when not 'working' to keep costs down but still on average £25's worth of consumables a time, three days of DY Labour and £700 worth of oil, filters, plugs, grease and the odd cable! Probably need some new tyres in that mileage, that's another £100's worth!

So, all told, in pretty much a best case scenario, working full time, 40 hours a week, 50 weeks of the year, anti-social hours, on the street, no support, at risk, of accident or injury, robbery or calamity, MIGHT clear £12,750, or nie on NMW still....

WHICH I could get signing on to do no brain agency work fling boxes in a warehouse, in the warm, in the dry, not having to spend a penny up front, no risk of being mugged for my pizza, having to work all hours, all week, and then spend my 'day off' working on the bike for next week.

Geez, even as a student, trying t ft work in around classes, be better off washing bottles in a Bernie inn, or clearing tales at a Mc Donalds, or standing around trying to look tough to the freshers in the SU Bar with a T-shirt that says "Security" on it, trying to seem important!

At BEST the suggestion of £12 per hour is halved; realistcally ts probably halved again.... AND I'd have to spend money, and take chances to make even that.

Explain to me again, WHY this is SUCH a great 'opportunity'?

It is NOT a wonderful way to make money! Its certainly not a great way to earn money. Costs vs Overheads, mean that there is no way it can pay for itself AND give you a 'bike for free'! YOU are effectively subsidizing the pizza people providing the motorbike for them! To work for less that you would in a pub washing bottles or clearing tables!

About the ONLY possible reason this might in ANY WAY, be a good idea, is if you are a student, you have ant-bking parents and one of them thinks you are a 'Lazy Student', and you MIGHT be able to blag them that you 'need' the bike for work, and that 'work' you are pulling your own weight, and not relying on them wholly for your support..... If they are dumb enough to fall for it, or incredulous enough at the initiative to let you carry on and find out WHY its NOT a particularly great scheme, for yourself!

Where's them emoticons, I REALLY need stronger emoticons for this one! Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

I've watched some of their cyclists run red lights, almost get killed by cars, almost run pedestrians over with their big box thing straining over their shoulders.

Motorcycle/ped riders, Lets put it this way, if instructors had the power to recall CBT's then every single one of the pricks riding around here for Deliveroo or whatever the fuck its called, would have their DL196 ripped up. I've seen not only bad riding but damn right dangerous riding in a rush to get that delivery done. This includes filtering up the inside of an articulated lorry while it was about to turn left.

You could not pay me enough to put my life at risk for the pennies you pay.

Something I believe DVLA do 'look into' from time to time... probably more so now.

There was 'something' of a scandal with a school, now no longer operating in this vicinity, who were put under DSA measures, after Immigration and I believe HM C&E had finished their case, against a notable fast food franchise in the area and 'evidence' used in prosecutions, that included five DL196 books, which were returned to DSA...

School they were issued to claimed they had been stolen from a portacabin that had bee broken into.....

But common knowledge on the play-grounds was that you didn't bother paying for a CBT, if you wanted one, you just went and got a job with the pizza place; and they'd spend five minutes to get you to ride round the car-park on a moped, and sign you a cert to send you out, then doc you a fiver a shift for five shifts or something, before they let you keep it!

ALLEDGEDLY.. the notion the books were 'stolen' in a port-a-cabin break in, was de-bunked, when they pulled the DL196's they had taken off deportees before they sent them home (or put them up in a Brighton hotel, on expenses, I don't know which!), and they were all signed off by a DTI, who was curiously one of the only ones actually continually on the books, but who had NEVER signed for any 'expenses' at the school....

I haven't done the job in a decade, so this IS going back a long way back to when standards were a lot laxer, trying to get schools established... BUT it's not the only school here abouts rumored to have sold books, and the fast food delivery folk were prime customers for them!

I very much doubt it's a scam that's been entirely eradicated.
