Hi,

Will make sure I turn that round when the cable comes. As for the flywheel, it is the original one that came with the bike so I'm guessing the starter gear matches as I had no issues with it.

Hiya

When you attach the cable you poke the cable through the end of the housing, then push the end out through the window, push the blade in place with the hole for the nipple in line with the window, hook the nipple into place and then rotate the blade 180 degrees within the housing. Then the nipple on the cable is held in place by the housing.

Can you take a better piccy of the flywheel? So I can see the holes. On the 123 flywheel the holes are blanked off.

Note that VERY early 123 engines had the same ignition as the 127, but think these early ones were only fitted to the Red Rose custom thing

All the best

Katy

From what you've said it seems to be the 127 flywheel, but with the 123 ignition.

Hi

Yep, that looks like a 127 flywheel. On the 127 ignition (which has a black coil rather than the blue coil) there is a set of timing marks embossed on the stator. Hence you can check the timing with a strobe light through the cutouts (as the 123 ignition advances with rpm, this isn't really worthwhile on a 123).

The flywheels are hard to find for sensible money so people tend to stick on whatever they can find.

I am toying with having a batch of flywheels made up, just drilled to take the existing starter gear (place has made SEM flywheels before but only for non electric start models, and they are not interested in making the electric start ring gear).

All the best

Katy

When I took the flywheel off I did wonder, as there didn't seem any point to the arrow. As I've owned the bike from new, this is how it's come out of the factory, I haven't changed any of the ignition parts. I just hope it all works now as if I have to change the flywheel I might need a new starter gear too!!

Hi

Strange, as yours is a late Sintesi, nowhere near the cutover from the 127 to the 123. Could a dealer have changed it when servicing it?

All the best

Katy

I guess it is possible it's been changed, although I never had any issues with it starting so can't really see why it would have been. Just one of those things, I've learnt a little bit more, you are a wealth of knowledge Smile

The engine is almost complete, it's come a long way from the corroded mess that smelt of cat piss!!

At what point does a bike restoration become a scratch build? :p

I bow to your bravery and skill... Amazing work done so far.

Ill be honest. I really really doubt i would ever have taken the challenge.

That's a good question, being honest I think I'm somewhere I between. I've kept as much as I could and replaced what I had to.

Bravery? Or stupidity? There are many reasons I started this, hopefully they'll end up being worth it...we'll see when/if I get her running again!

I've learnt a lot, done things I've never done before, and emptied my wallet many times over. Would I do it again? Definitely not with something as bad as what I started with this time.

It's really bugging me you are using that mankey manifold and plastic covers on that lovely clean engine. Laughing

Laughing

It's bugging me too! Once up and running I'm thinking about putting the 34mm carb on which will require a new manifold so that'll be sorted. The plastic covers do need something doing with them, but I'm not sure what yet, I guess a spray to match the engine is the best option.

You'll struggle to get it bob on, it might be worth thinking about a complementary colour instead Thumbs Up

As embarrassing as it is....not yet!

It's still ongoing, I've done a few bits here and there as and when I've had chance, but it's still a work in progress...

I haven't given up on it yet...one day! haha Smile

I wouldn't worry about it, it'll be a damn awesome 125 when it's done that's for sure!
It's taken me since July to sort my clutch, re-build my powervalve governor and paint my engine casings. Oh and I've modified the rear carrier rack and fitted some stickers. The bike only needed a top end re-build and my new ignition fitting neither of which I've done yet.

Life just keeps getting in the way, although I am getting tired of moving boxes around in the house! I've got some spare holidays from work booked so hope to get a rolling chassis back together soon. Worst thing is, a few days graft will see most of it back together.

There is some more painting of small bits to do, but most of it is ready to go...just need to get my lazy ass in gear and get it done!!

It will be nice to see it all back together...even if it doesn't start when I'm done haha

So, after a very long break in the project, with several false starts, I've finally got going on the rebuild. With all the bits that I have replaced, I'm not sure
if the project is a restoration or a rebuild, realistically a hybrid of both. This project has been many things for me, but the end product of being able to ride the
motorbike that I bought in 1991 is all that counts.

When I started off taking photos, I wanted to make sure that everything went back to where it came from, but it's evolved into a full-on geek account of what I've been up to!

For those that have followed the project, I hope you'll enjoy seeing the bike returning to how it should be, piece by piece. As I go along I'll try to remember what I've
replaced, and what I've done, so you can see the full picture of what this has taken. Unfortunately I seem to have lost the file with all the costs involved, but it's
been way more than the bike is worth now, and what I paid for it to start with...it's only money, and you can't take it with you at the end!!

I know how much hassle it is to keep these build threads going but we appreciate it.

Powder coating: What happens with parts surfaces and threaded areas? Looking at the wheel in particular - do you mask it before sending off or is it a case of re-tapping things and removing overspread?
