I'm on the hunt for one and would like to hear of some thoughts or experiences with the car.

I'm looking to buy used, between 06-08 plate, and as low a mileage as I can get for £10K.

I've done much reading and know of some of the more common faults/issues so have a rough idea as to the questions I should be asking when viewing the cars.

So does anyone own one or has owned one, that can share any valuable advice/tips?

much thanks Thumbs Up

PS. not looking for advice on alternatives for the money, we're pretty set on this car, just want to know what to look out for really when buying.

I'm wary of big Merc diesels. 2 I've known have had lovely injector seal failure, lots of mess and a few hours work. Nothing else to add Laughing

Cheers, this is an issue I've not come across in my reading. Will be sure to check if the seals have been done.

I suspect for a 80k+ miles model if it was to fail it would have already done so?

Dammit!!

OK, will be sure to check on that. thanks a lot for the heads up. In any case I intend to go through the receipts the car comes with with a fine-tooth comb.

I might if the car is in good condition, drives well and the paperwork proves it's been well maintained.

Don't be fooled, mileage isn't such an issue for cars as it perhaps is for bikes. Low mileage means zilch if the car is a dog to start with, probably why it's got low mileage in the first place.

I'd be less concerned about seals and more worried about the injectors themselves.

Seals are pennies and a couple of hours work to change them all, injectors are just shy of £200 a pop, even pattern, so that's a big bill waiting to surprise you.

I would also want to see it start from stone cold - glow plugs can be an issue, as they have a tendency to seize in and snap when you try to take them out.

I have a mobile guy that drills them out in situ, but he charges me around £100 a go.

The only other problems are common to all modern diesels - sensors, EGRs, fuel pressure issues.

On the whole though, these engines are pretty good and parts prices aren't too awful, even from Merc, but of course there's a big pattern part market.

They wouldn't hold any big fears for me, even with a few miles on.

Cheers Shaft, that's what I've been hearing in a nutshell. I've read about many horror stories about that engine and in particular th 7G-Tronic gearbox, but as with most similar things you tend to only read about the bad bits.

That said, i'll still be looking for receipts for services/repairs for peace of mind and of course a cold start and lengthy test drive at varying speed limits/road conditions.
