My today my black and decker drill bit the dust. It was only a cheap thing and i was using with a 50mm core bit to make hole for a waste pipe.

Anyhow that's the third cheap drill I've killed, so I'm looking to replace it with something built to last.

I'm looking for a corded drill, mainly used for general masonry/woodwork sometimes general metalwork too.

budget maybe about 100 quid

Get two.

Get an SDS for masonry.

Get a normal, variable speed one for metalwork.

NEVER use the second one in hammer mode.

Go to the shop and pick one that has the least sideways play on the chuck. Good luck with that because most of them are shite. Even the "good" ones.

Not sure if it can be done.
I was looking for something with a proper two speed gearbox - the variable speed drill I have has utterly crap torque at low speeds - but they seem to be harder to find.
I like the look of this, bit above the budget though.

They are easily improved by removing the hammer selector and shimming the ball bearing end of the shaft. The plain bearing is shit even when new but can be disassbled and replaced.

Agree with the SDS for masonry Buy a cheap one from Aldi/Lidle - 2 year guarantee. Knacker it, money back

Buy two if you cannot be without one

I have an Aldi SDS which has lasted 10 years so far and still going strong with pretty regular usage - my house has solid walls and the drill has not missed a beat - including using big core drills for waste and extractor vents

You can also use it "hammer only" so with chisel bits - that is really handy
