I've somehow been scammed.
My phone bill is £18 higher than it should be this month, so I called EE to kick off. Apparently I've signed up for a weekly text service somehow, so they passed on the company details and blocked my account from further payments.
Contacted the company and they told me the refunds team would be in touch soon, without me even saying why I was calling.

So I just thought I'd spread the word that even if you aren't a gullible fool, you can somehow sign up to these things. The woman on the phone said "Oh you probably clicked an advert on Facebook or something..."
EE had third party charges blocked on my account inside of 30 seconds, but said that it's a service that's normally used for charity donations, parking fees and congestion charge payments so they usually leave it open.

The company name: TxtNation

tl;dr Got robbed. Don't get robbed.

Here's some of the texts that I was apparently paying £4.50 for:

They were a bugger to find in the router log because of the date code.

The lesson here seems to be be careful what you click on when viewing naughty websites on your phone.

It wasn't through my phone, it was through a PC connected to a 4G router.

I can find porn without firing off dodgy popups, so I'm guessing it's most likely from something like Pirate Bay.

If I were to arbitrarily receive demands for payment from my mobile phone operator the DD would be cancelled immediately. They could have fun sending angry letters and possibly angry men that wouldn't make it beyond the front door, I imagine.

Their system is the arbiter of whether I've called a premium rate number. I'm not sure it would be possible to disprove.

Can you just disable this nonsense entirely? I can't think of a single premium rate service that isn't a prolescam.

Of course the latter is after blocking the phone, and wrecking your credit report so you might struggle to get another contract or any sort of credit.

You can, and I suggest you do. That was why I created the thread.

You can block these services through the network, which is what I'm suggesting.

I've had exactly the same issue with EE a few years ago. This was from a phone that wasn't rooted with adaway. I'm assuming it was a dodgy advert that I accidentally clicked.

My solution so far:
Adblock - no exceptions - I use PiHole.

Administrators using ads aren't in control of what's put through their website and malicious ones can get through. 100% blocking 100% of the time reduces my risk from these ads.

Can't say I've ever been too concerned by the bogeyman of my "credit". It seems about as decent as an RNG to me.

Within the same few months I've been rejected for a 10 quid 30 day rolling phone contract and accepted for a 10K+ credit card (which I have no intention of actually using).

The fact that a 'credit check' is even run for a 10 quid a month sim only phone contract is bonkers anyway. They bear zero risk on a sim only contract that they can drop at any time.

As far as I can tell it's either incompetence (no-one realising that sim only is far less risky than selling a handset), or just an excuse to hoover more data up. Probably the latter.

A credit check on a contract sim (even a short term one) is there because people will run up massive bills and not pay them. Or may even have run the same scam before at another provider.
As to banks. Well you would be surprised to see how much data they get fed without even going near a credit check. From all other institutions...
As well as they will make their own decisions based on the above info and their own risk appetite Laughing
Marketing say we need more customers. Risk levels get drummed down. 12 months later masses of people are in the hands of the credit teams, and being managed out.

Update:
Refund has not landed. Contacted them and they told me because the number isn't linked to my PayPal account, they'd sent me a text (again, to a router) and I had to click the link and input my PayPal details to get my refund.

There's no way I'm clicking that link.

Told them to send it directly to the PayPal account, using the email address I originally gave them. If they don't do that, I'm guessing that's then confirmed scam. Where do I go then? Ofcom? Police?

One of the things I like about giffgaff is that things like this aren't possible.

It's basically PAYG, where you prepay for a goodybag of minutes, data, texts. If I were to accidentally sign up to dirty texts written in wingdings they'd quicklly find out it isn't covered by the goody bag and the £2 of backup credit isn't enough to pay for it.

Another update: they've transferred me £45. I was expecting £18.

Gonna keep quiet and hope it's a win.

Most likely they're going to ask for it back though.
