Just looking for peoples experience on claiming on your home insurance against accidental damage and if and by what onward premiums increased by.

My plight begins when I dropped a watch I have had for a few years with an RRP of around £545 currently.

I have sent the watch off to the insurers who have faffed around for a while and in the mean time I have bought a new and more expensive watch.

Today I have heard back and they are offering a repair for a £50 excess but in reality the second hand watch is worth £150/£200 max less my £50. Apparently the repair is worth £300...

Or

I can take a settlement based on the repair of £165ish (this has excess taken off it already) and get the broken watch back.

Or

I can just mug off the whole thing and have no claims against my policy.

The only 2 options I am considering are cash settlement and broken watch back or mugging the whole thing off and having no claims.

So my only real question is: -

TLDR

Have you claimed on your policy for accidental damage, and if so how much for? And if you did... how much did your subsequent years policy go up by?

I am looking at this from the perspective of if settlement is better than increase on future premiums then I am getting some cash back on my policy. If I am only going to pay it back over subsequent years then there is no point.

I just have no baseline to compare against.

I have been with same insurers for 3/4 years with no claims so far.

I claimed for a £300 tv a few years back. And the next years premium was £50 higher.

I didn't bother to track it past that next year - but I would assume it either stayed at that rate, or went down as I don't remember being overly bothered at that point...

Hope that helps!

Doing some googling people say that premiums increase just by contacting your insurer even if there is no payout and therefore I may as well take the payout so at least I have something and chalk this up to experience when I get a premium hike in ongoing years.

Accidental damage in a way but someone reversed in to my back wall and smashed it up, it was/is about 7mx 2.5m. Insurance paid out £3.5k, premiums did not go up the next year.

Claimed for a shower cubicle door year before last. £375 for £75 excess.

Send receipt, they sent check. Premium went up by £200 the next year, so shopped around as I do every year and got it for £15 less than the original premium with some other company.

There was no drama.

You sure the insurers inspecting it etc isn't already considered a claim? i.e. - I doubt it was free.
