Hello Chums.

Got a new bike last year and i chose not to fit an aftermarket alarm to the bike due the problems with shagged batteries on previous bikes.
However taking my bike to work with no security at all is making me rather nervous, Can anyone recommend me a disc lock?

I appreciate they are not going to stop a criminal who is hell bent on having my bike but it would at least add some delay to any opportunists who see the bike and can't just simply break the steering lock.

I'm currently enjoying my throttle (aka "croc") lock:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/301674231377

Because why?

All the security of a disc lock (i.e. mostly visual, will resist a tooled up pikey for as long as it takes the angle grinder to spin up), but no mucking around with a grubby disc, or any possibility of forgetting that it's on.

It's a more convenient form of security theatre.

Bring it, BCF.

Both me and my lad have one of these. Work well as alarm, very visual and i expect not quite so quick to cut of with angle grinder. Cant prove last statement without taking an angle grinder to it which I'm not about to do.
Comes with a cord that attaches up to handlebar to remind you it is on.

Abus Granite Quick

Will resist pikey tools.

Sauce: me. they tried on mine, gave up and cut the disc instead. left lock intact albeit with a few grazes.

Just a point, be careful where you attach it. I found out the hard way, although you're probably smarter than me!

I'm currently using an abus xs67, either as my portable disk lock or as a chain lock. It appears quite well built and the key is reasonably complex

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/191858927239

I have a mammoth padlock with a long shrouded shackle intended as a disk lock, but it's only got one key now and it's a right arse to fit on the bandit, was easier to fit when I had a skinny 19" wheel up front, but the plastic shrouding isn't much of a security feature.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/MAMMOTH-THATCHAM-11MM-SHACKLE-REMINDER/dp/B002RAZ1GY

Still better than an oxford mini-D shackle. Used briefly for my 125 then mostly for securing garden equipment. Lock siezed and bent a key, so i broke it open with some cheap 18" breaker bars

Xena XX15 for me (https://www.xenasecurity.com/xx15-disc-lock-alarm/)

All I can say is that it's been 100% effective for me in that I've never had my bike nicked! The lock's never been attacked though - so anybody's guess whether that means it's completely put off the pikeys, or that I've been lucky and it wouldn't have been nicked even if I hadn't used a lock (I don't think V-Stroms are particularly attractive to thieves, and it's garaged at night and not often left parked in especially risky places...)

Looks like aluminium? Could probably be cut with a junior hacksaw quite discreetly. Cut brake line or undo banjo bolt and bike can be scooter-pushed across town? I suppose it has the bonus of making it more likely that a scrote (and your bike) don't survive the theft attempt.

But is token theatrical gesture.

Xena alarmed disclock here as well. Can't remember which model, bought for the ER6 but also fits the Spacker. Thumbs Up
I can't speak for it's durability, as I don't ride out and leave my bike unattended so it's only been used a few times
while i nip into a pub or use the loo somewhere or whatever but it's at least 3 years old and still sounds good and loud
so the battery has stood the test of time at least.

Xena XXsomething alarmed disc lock for me too.

Big chunky looking thing with stickers all over it, and the alarm is extremely loud.

It is probably over-sensitive (can't use it with a cover on when its windy) but thats probably preferable to under-sensitive.

Batteries ran out last week, after probably 2 or 3 years intermittent use. Still works as a lock but i will be replacing the batteries.

Repeated because its important: Get a disclock reminder cable.

You'll enjoy that... unless I was missing something obvious, after you've put the new battery into the alarm module there's not enough time to get that back into the casing before the bloody thing goes off. Next time I'll get my ear defenders out before I start on it! Shocked

Actually a better way IMHO is as recommended by bamt here:
https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=4421374&highlight=#4421374
It's brilliant - I now always have a short length of rubber tubing on the blade of either my lock key or the bike ignition key.

What I think is important to reiterate is to use the disclock on your rear wheel, because it's far, far easier and quicker for a couple of scrotes to manhandle a locked bike into a transit van if its only the front wheel that's locked. Both wheels locked even better.

Generally regarded as the most potato of security products. People who know no better buy Oxford.

I've been using a Xena X2 for years, don't think they make them any more. Feels and appears good quality, though probably no better that anything else now the pikeys just cut a chunk out of your disc. Bright yellow so at least works visually.

Thanks for your suggestions, I did look for the XENA X2 but i couldn't find it in stock anywhere. So I ended up buying an ABUS 8077 alarmed disc lock for £100.

Some might say its overkill for a Honda StepThru but it'll give me peace of mind.

I've had one of those for a couple of years now and although the alarm part of it has faded and died (yes, I've tried new batteries), it does appear to be made of stronger stuff than some of Oxfords cheaper products. It's Thatcham approved too, so I presume, rightly or not, that it has to be of a certain standard.

Not sure where on a scale between cheese and Kryptonite that standard is though.

The soft luggage is decent enough.

Their security stuff, well, it's no Level 18.

To be fair, we may just hear about it failing over and over and over and over and over again because it's so common.

I think that's part of their issue, it's cheap and ubiquitous.
