You really need something with a (fair) bit more poke than your students are riding. There are times when you have to catch them up or want to overtake them so they can follow you.

I can't see a properly ridden CB500 having much trouble doing that if they're sticking anywhere near to UK speed limits.

If you need to catch or overtake them without breakin' tha law, breakin' tha law yourself, then they need to be doing under the limit, right?

Taking part of the answer and changing the context Tut Tut For clarity I will repeat what I said:

"Yes, a GS/CB500 would do it, but it would just be painfully slow and annoyingly vibey."

Nobody is talking about speeding or breaking the law. The point is to make life easier for yourself and wringing the neck of a gutless 500 to keep up with students is just making it hard work.

What did your DAS instructor ride Roger? Was he able to easily keep up with you on your training bike? Tell us a little bit about the overall experience of bikes and how capacity/power made a difference during training...

all my instructors rode the big BMWs or other tourers. Big, intimidating, good road presence, able to stop traffic if needs be etc.

any reason not to go with the xsr900

I've seen one of those in the flesh and its lovely, Really does look like a lot of fun. Sadly, as they are only out, even the second hand ones are going to be out of any budget I end up with, my budget all depends on what I get for mine.

But... But.. But it's an 850, same as mine. Why call it a 900?
The name MT09 suggests 900cc, but at least doesn't claim it outright.

Gsr750 is great. 600 handling with torque. Got rid of my shiver 750 for one. (Shiver made cbts cost more in petrol). Only got something else because wife didn't like it.
