Interesting. How people spend their money is an expression of their personal culture - a sort of aggregation of the psyche by means of collecting things. It's a reliable gauge of past, present and future conditions, and it works for all sorts of scenarios. Tell 2 different people to go to the beach and collect the rocks they like best, and when they come back with their hauls, you may find they weren't different at all, but iterations of a civilisation's collective unconscious. How can a person be distinguished other than by reference to that civilisation's ideal? How can he pass muster by bringing back a sandstone when his compatriots value red shiny rocks? He cannot, because even if he prefers the common sandstone, it cannot animate his desire.

Borrowed crash helmet and tried a Honda Hornet,...Loved it, just a bit new and expensive. Will be looking around for older model which is in my £3000 range. Got to budget a couple of hundred for helmet, gloves and jacket after getting rid of mine when I sold the T/bird. Hoping to sort bike out in next couple of months....Thanks for all the advice.

Budget for bike should include kit......3k for a bike is ok, but add helmet, jacket and trousers..3.5k.
If it's a vanity purchase, add 10% for spontaneous buys.
Bike you like is more important than cc.
Find things you like the look of and then ask for opinions.

Bought almost new jacket and helmet for £175, looking at boots and gloves about £100. Hate wearing heavy bike trousers, so may splash out on some armoured jeans. Before there is uproar over a used helmet, it's only be worn 3 times, old guy I bought it off didn't like full face helmet and bought open face one.

Just the bike to sort now.

My brother has a Honda CB500F and a quick AT search demonstrates a few going within budget (some an ickle bit over but nothing that couldn't be dragged adequately South with a bit of persistence).

Not retro, but naked, upright and satisfying capacity preferences.

I've ridden my brother's one a number of times and I really quite like it - it's good, innocent fun. It's obviously no demon, and the front end does feel a little light and unsure when you're really giving it beans on bendy stuff. However, the engine is very tractable, it's got a bit of poke, it's comfortable, extremely light and costs pennies to run.

At ~195kg wet, that seems extremely hyperbolic.

There really is no getting by you. I apologise absolutely profusely. What I should've written is that the bike feels extremely light while on board. Compared to my Streetie, the thing feels like a pushbike.

Honest, guv', it does.

Peculiar, it's actually a few kg heavier than the Striple. Thinking

Presumably they've done a decent job of keeping the weight low down?
