So I bought an RSV4 RF from a dealer 3 hours away from me a month ago. All done on the phone, paid for delivery and had it dropped at my door... happy days.

Now the bike was pre-registered 2016 model with 0 miles on it, so effectively brand new. They registered the bike on 28th September 2016 and I bought it on 27th Feb 2017.

I just got a demand letter from DVLA saying, "YOU MUST TAX OR SORN YOUR VEHICLE IMMEDIATELY".

So I'm like, wtf is this?

Goes on the DVLA website, put details in to tax the bike...

Vehicle make APRILIA
Tax class Bicycle
Tax/SORN status

Your vehicle will be taxed from 01 March 2017 This vehicle's previous tax/SORN expired on: 01 February 2017. This means the vehicle has not been taxed since this date.
You can apply for vehicle tax from today's date, with a tax start date of the first of this month, however, please note that it is an offence to be the registered keeper of a vehicle that is untaxed and does not have SORN in force. DVLA's enforcement section may be in contact with you regarding this gap in tax.

So have I been riding around for a month with no tax? If so, will I not have set off any of them fixed ANPR cameras or anything like that (there are about 6 sets of them round here).

Yes, you have. You need to tax it as soon as you purchase it since the change in the tax rules - no previous tax carries over (so if it was taxed already the previous owner gets a refund of any complete months remaining).

I'd tax it now from the start of March (as you didn't use it on the 27th/28th Feb, did you, and your liability starts from the date on the V5). So they could still come after you for two days (which is actually another full month, plus penalty, but that's better than another full month).

Bike is now taxed but still... nobody said anything to me about it when I bought it.

Don't get what you mean.

Were you under the impression that the dealer would or even could pay the VED on your vehicle?

I'd agree with paying VED now. You'll "lose" most of a month, but you should have bought it in February, so you've really won one.

You could ride your luck until 1st April, but paying it now more or less squares you up.

Ignore anything else from them.

Fowlers ensured that the strumpet was taxed (admittedly using my money) before they allowed it out of the dealership.

They didn't give a shit about insurance, though.

Did you assume new bikes came pre-taxed? They don't.

If you were riding it away from the dealers, they could have gone online on your behalf and taxed it for you (using your card) using the new keeper supplement.

As they were dropping it off, it's not being ridden away untaxed, so there is no need to.

Not the dealers fault at all.

However, great choice of bike Thumbs Up Are you enjoying it?

I just assumed that it would be either taken care of or I would be told I needed to tax it myself.

I'd assume that when buying a new bike you should be told either way? I don't give a shit if it's not included in the price I paid, what's another £45 to tax it?

Point being, I was completely oblivious to it being un-taxed. At no point did they tell me the tax had run out on 1st Feb 2017 and I needed to tax it... that's all.

Maybe it's partially or even all my fault, that's fine too... just wasn't sure what the fuck happened, never had this happen before.
