Torque wrenches are not to be used for loosening bolts. They are for tightening them. Use a breaker bar for loosening.

The little knot thing is called a split pin. It's in there to prevent the nut from loosening. You need to remove it before trying to loosen the nut.

I think what you're calling the swing arm nut is actually the brake torque arm?

yeah thats exactly what I've been trying to do, the bottom nut is rounded off and probably stripped.

I took off the little knot thing on the end of the thread to get at it with the torque wrench.

Torque wrenches are for doing fasteners up to a known torque (tightness).
Using a torque wrench to undo a seized nut is normally frowned on.

First post: The only tools I have are the ones that came with the bike.
Then: I used my dad's tools which are all high quality, is carpenter.
Now: to get at it with the torque wrench.

OK, use actual penetrating oil, not WD-40.

If a correctly fitting socket is just rounding it off further, I'd suggest using a pipe wrench ("Stillson") which you can get at any plumbing shop or B&Q. This will grip tighter as you heave on it. A length of scaffold pole or similar is invaluable as a cheater bar to increase the torque.

Irwin bolt grips work well, but aren't cheap and you'll likely have to order them.

You might get lucky with a big pair of mole grips. I wouldn't bother, you'll be as likely to chew it up further. Filing flats and using a smaller spanner is also unlikely to work if the correct one rounded.

Success, I managed to tighten it and the bike is happy again. Turns out I didn't need to loosen the lowest nut, just the axle nut.

However, the guy at the garage said my sprockets are dangerously worn out and that the chain could fly off soon.

You should still fix the nut. By tightening the chain you are effectively moving the wheel back. As such the brake panel needs to be able to rotate slightly. It can't do that with the nut tightened. Probably OK this time but after further tightening it could cause problems.

Edit:spelling

Get a DiD and JT sprocket set from we moto. You're going to have to sort that torque arm nut out to remove the wheel for the new sprocket anyway.

You did remember to turn the chain adjusters on both sides by the same.amount?

yeah I was diagnosed with it when I was a very young kid, I've mostly grown out of it but it shows sometimes.
