Hi all.

I bought a drz last week with a noisy engine so i've stripped it down to find the fault... Only thing i can find wrong is some marks on the exhaust cam journal (see pics)
With the ex cam in and locked down i can just about feel a slight up down movement when pulling on the sprocket side of cam...

The noise i'm talking about kind of sounds like a dry bearing. The crank bearings are fine and no play in the crank and both piston and barrel are in great shape (bikes only done 11000miles ).

Is this likely to be the cause of the noise ?
If so what's my best option to repair it ?

Thanks.
Dave.

Is anyone willing to ignore my personal choice of username and help me oit with the op?

I realise ive already pissed off one of the most knowledgeable people on here (pete) but my choice of username or anything else i choose to do as long as its not causing anyone harm should be ignored.

Perfectly reasonable post, perfectly reasonable request, photos good quality, looks like someone got out of the wrong side of bed this morning!
As to your problem. Cams running in the head material can fall foul of this kind of wear. You could F about having the cam bearing surface built up and reground, then the head bearing surface refaced, but a replacement head would be easier and probably cheaper. (As long as its not damaged, of course).

Thanks for the reply..

So would you say its unusable as it is then?

Any idea on prices if it does need repaired?

There expensive engines and even a good uswd head is 300+ so id rather fix this one if needed. Im just trying to find out if this is likely to cause the noise im hearing.

There was also quite a loud tapping from top end but the valve clearances were way too tight and there was no exhaust gasket so i assumed most of the tapping was down to that. Wondering now if maybe the cam was rattling in the journal.

Thanks.
Dave.
Posting with mobile as im at work.

Was the valve next to this scoring a tight one? If they're tight then the cam has no break from touching the valve and keeps getting hotter and hotter until it either expands so much it picks up on the head surface or the oil gets so thin there that it does nothing. Quite a few TDM/TRX850 heads die this way.

Do you have a manual? Is there a clearance given for that particular area?

Thanks for the reply...

That clearance was at .10 and specs are .10 -.20 so was right on the limit. Would that be enough to overheat it ?

The exhaust valve right in front of the above was at .17 and should be .20-.30

If it was near the spec then no, I doubt that was your problem. The other thing that can cause this on TDM/TRXs is the cam cap being tightened down too much, 10Nm is all that is specified for the bolts.

A bit of googling reveals you're not on your own though, this does happen to DRZs. Most seem to put it down to low oil..
